Warner joins Gilchrist with 16th ODI century

The Australia opener continued his good form at the World Cup with a superb 166 from just 147 deliveries against Bangladesh

David Warner has elevated himself into rare air with his 16th one-day international century, posting the highest score of the World Cup to lead Australia to a monster total in their clash with Bangladesh.

Warner's superb form in his international comeback continued Thursday at Trent Bridge, finishing on 166 off just 147 balls as the Aussies reached 5-368 off 49 overs before rain stopped play.

The left-hander brought up the milestone off 110 balls with a single off Shakib al-Hasan, pumping his fist as he trotted down the pitch before setting off for his trademark leaping celebration.

He then exploded to take 53 off his last 23 balls, taking advantage of Trent Bridge's unique dimensions as he cracked five sixes and 14 fours before eventually being dismissed by Soumya Sarkar in the 45th over.

Warner shared in 121-run and 192-run partnerships with Aaron Finch (53 off 51) and Usman Khawaja (89 off 72) respectively.

It was Warner's second hundred of the tournament, having crashed a vital 107 against Pakistan on a tricky pitch in Taunton last week.

In his 112th ODI, Warner also drew level with legendary wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist in third spot among Australia's leading ODI century-makers and is now behind only Ricky Ponting (29 tons) and Mark Waugh (18).

It's a mark of how good Warner’s 50-over career has been that his batting average (which stood at 44.46 before Thursday's ton) is notably higher than Ponting’s (41.81), Waugh’s (39.35) and Gilchrist’s (35.93)

It was far from Warner's most dominant knock, getting dropped on 10 before going 49 balls without hitting a boundary through the middle of his innings.

His 121-run opening stand with Finch also marked their fifth fifty-plus partnership of the tournament in six games.

Only Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden have had more first-wicket stands of more than 50 at a World Cup (the pair had seven at the 2007 edition in the Caribbean).

Warner scores classy World Cup century

Bangladesh were left to rue giving Warner a life when he was on 10, with Sabbir Rahman failing to hold on to a straightforward chance at point off the bowling of captain Mashrafe Mortaza.

On the same pitch Australia went for 6-481 on against England last year, Warner took advantage of the Nottingham venue's unusual dimensions after a watchful start.

Warner whacked the first six of the day by hooking Indian Premier League teammate Mustafizur Rahman 20 rows back into concrete, necessitating a change of ball.

Australia close in on semis spot after Warner's brilliant ton

After taking 47 off the first nine overs, he and Finch proceeded to tonk 51 off the next six following the introduction of Bangladesh's trump card, spinner Shakib, who Warner promptly slog-swept for a towering six.

Warner took his medicine after bringing up a 55-ball half-century, with Finch dismissed by part-timer Soumya Sarkar as he and No.3 Usman Khawaja watchfully pushed things along through the middle overs.

Warner put on a show after reaching triple-digits, with a glorious straight six off Rubel Hossain followed by a trademark switch-hit for four off Shakib.
