Morris stars as Rajasthan send Cummins' Kolkata bottom

Chris Morris's four wickets help Rajasthan Royals to a comfortable six-wicket win that consigned the Kolkata Knight Riders to a fourth straight defeat and last place on the IPL table

Chris Morris, Rajasthan's record IPL buy, has proved his worth again with some match-winning bowling against struggling Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Royals pushed Kolkata to the bottom of the table with their six-wicket victory on Saturday as their multi-million dollar signing, Chris Morris, grabbed 4-23 to restrict the Knight Riders to 9-133.

Captain Sanju Samson, compiling a near run-a-ball unbeaten 42, then anchored Rajasthan to their target as they cruised to 4-134 with seven balls to spare.

"You could see in his eyes he wanted the competition. He wanted to get the big batsmen out," Samson said of the South African allrounder, who has now played match-winning roles for them with both bat and ball.

Plenty of eyebrows were raised earlier this year when the 33-year-old South African allrounder was bought by the Royals for a record fee of A$2.8 million in the IPL auction.

But he again demonstrated his value, especially with Rajasthan having now lost both England internationals Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer for the remainder of this year's IPL. Stokes had already been ruled out with a finger injury, and England this weekend confirmed Archer would miss the tournament to stay home and rehab from his own finger surgery.

Despite not featuring, Stokes had courted controversy for Rajasthan when he lambasted the state of the wickets in Chennai as "trash" ahead of another low-scoring affair.

Although Rajasthan's problems in the batting Powerplay continued, Samson kept his team on track with able support from David Miller, 24 not out, and Shivam Dube, 22.

Jos Buttler's struggle at the top continued when he was trapped leg before wicket for five by leg-spinner Varun Chakarvarthy off his second ball.

Yashasvi Jaiswal hit five boundaries in his 17-ball knock of 22, before he holed out in the deep as Rajasthan lost both openers within the first five overs.

But Samson added 45 with Dube, and Miller twice survived lbw appeals against Shivam Mavi.

Earlier, Rajasthan's left-arm fast bowlers Mustafizur Rahman (1-22) and Jaydev Unadkat (1-25) bowled impressively up front.

Shubman Gill (11) and captain Eoin Morgan (0) struggled for their fifth successive game before they were run out.

Unadkat removed power-hitter Sunil Narine cheaply for six in the 10th over and top-scorer Rahul Tripathi, with 36, was deceived by Rahman's slower delivery to get caught in the deep just when it looked the batsman had settled down.

Cummins blasts 30-run over in new career-best T20 score

Morris chipped in with his four late wickets in his last two overs. They included dangerman Andre Russell, who was caught on the edge of the boundary by Miller.

Australia's Pat Cummins, who last match smashed a new career best T20 score of 66 as his fiancée announced the couple's pregnancy, was dismissed for 10 from 6, and conceded 36 from 3.5 overs.
