Anderson back in England line-up, Bumrah to lead India

James Anderson has recovered from an ankle injury to return for the rescheduled fifth Test against an Indian side to be led by Jasprit Bumrah as Rohit Sharma has COVID-19

Veteran seamer James Anderson will replace Jamie Overton for England in the rescheduled fifth cricket Test against India at Edgbaston.

India will be led by Jasprit Bumrah as Rohit Sharma has not shaken off a case of COVID-19.

England also named Jos Buttler as their new white-ball captain overnight after Eoin Morgan's retirement, with his first assignment next Friday's first T20I against India at Southampton.

Anderson, England's record wicket-taker in Test cricket, missed the third Test against New Zealand with an ankle injury.

His duel with India stalwart Virat Kohli will be an interesting sub-plot of the match with Anderson level with Nathan Lyon as having dismissed the former No.1 ranked Test batter seven times, the most of any bowler in Tests.

With Ben Foakes recovering from COVID-19, Sam Billings was retained as the wicketkeeper for the match beginning on Friday.

Stuart Broad has kept his place with Jamie Overton dropping out despite an impressive debut in the victory over New Zealand at Headingley in Leeds last week.

Rohit had been doubtful for the clash since he tested positive to the virus during a warm-up match in Leicester last week.

He had a Rapid Antigen Test on Thursday and returned a positive result, which snuffed out his chances of playing in the match at Edgbaston.

India faced a leadership crisis with vice-captain KL Rahul also missing the match to have surgery for a sports hernia in Germany.

Bumrah will lead the side with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

Mayank Agarwal has joined the squad as cover, but India are yet to decide who will be Shubman Gill's opening partner in Rohit's absence.

Coach Rahul Dravid has said they have two more options in keeper-batter KS Bharat and top order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Rohit's absence is ironic given the series, which India lead 2-1, could not be completed last year because of COVID-19 cases in the visitors' camp.

Both sides have new captains since the fourth Test in September after Ben Stokes took over from Joe Root in April, while Rohit assumed the role after Kohli stepped aside in January.

England XI: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (captain), Sam Billings (wicketkeeper), Matthew Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson
