Proteas rolled for 83 as England square ODI series

Three of South Africa's top four failed to score as they were bowled out for their joint-lowest ODI score against England who levelled the series at 1-1

England have skittled South Africa for a paltry 83 to earn a dominant 118-run victory in the rain-affected second ODI at Old Trafford to square the three-match series at 1-1.

England set the tourists a target of 202 on Friday but South Africa had their top-order swept away as they slumped to 4-6 and were bowled out in 20.4 overs for their joint-lowest ODI score against England.

"It was great to get the win and I'm delighted with the way we came out with the ball. It really put us on our way," England captain Jos Buttler said.

"The guys continue to play in the fashion we want to play as a team. Having that mindset and positivity got us to a score that now looks great.

"We know we can improve, but that will consistently be the message. We're trying to impose ourselves and put pressure back on the opposition. I want us to try and keep the positive option."

Rain delayed the start of play by almost four hours, restricting the game to a 29-overs per innings contest.

England were bowled out for 201 in 28.1 overs as South Africa looked to seal the series after a 62-run victory in the opening match at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.

But any advantage they might have had from winning the toss and making England bat amid gloomy conditions quickly faded as their top-order collapsed.

Three of South Africa's top four failed to score and Quinton de Kock (5) went cheaply as England ran riot in their opening four overs.

South Africa never recovered with Adil Rashid mopping up the innings and finishing with figures of 3-29.

Heinrich Klaasen was South Africa's top-scorer with 33 and was one of only three to get to double figures.

Liam Livingstone was England's best with 38, contributing in a brisk 43-run partnership for the seventh wicket with player-of-the-match Sam Curran (35 off 18 balls) that hauled the hosts from 6-101 to 7-144.

Opener Jonny Bairstow scored 28 before being bowled by Dwaine Pretorius, who took 4-36.

The last match of the ODI series will take place in Leeds on Sunday.
