Aussie trio into Hundred final as English teen slams 42-ball ton

Annabel Sutherland, Phoebe Litchfield and Nicola Carey have helped power their Northern Superchargers into tonight's final of the women's Hundred.

The trio continued their sparkling form in Saturday's comprehensive 'eliminator' triumph over defending champs London Spirit at The Oval, all making substantial contributions on a day when even they were upstaged by their teenage English teammate Davina Perrin, who blasted an extraordinary record-breaking ton.

Sutherland nearly took a hat-trick, while Litchfield and Carey both delivered dazzling batting cameos in support of Perrin, whose 42-ball ton was the fastest ever by a woman in the Hundred, as the Superchargers booked a final date against the unbeaten Southern Brave at Lord's on Sunday.

Litchfield, the second-highest scorer in this year's competition behind countrywoman Meg Lanning, banged 35 off 19 balls, with two sixes, while Hobart Hurricanes' Carey provided a glorious finale, clouting 22 off the last five-ball set from compatriot Grace Harris – 4 4 4 6 4 – to finish on 31no from just 12 balls.

It helped propel the Superchargers to a competition record 5-214, a total that proved far too much even for a Spirit outfit featuring their own trio of Australian internationals, Harris, Charli Knott and Georgia Redmayne.

Big-hitting Harris was promoted to the top of the order in a bid to chase down the massive target but her miserable day, after her spin took a battering, was completed when she was bowled on just the second ball of the reply by a beauty from Grace Ballinger (3-22).

Knott delivered brief hope with her scintillating 40 off 16 balls, featuring seven fours and a six, but once she'd holed out off Carey (1-40), the momentum was lost and not even a battling unbeaten 29-ball 50 from Redmayne, completed off the final delivery of the innings, could halt a 42-run drubbing.

Sutherland (3-40) grabbed the wickets of Sarah Glenn and Eva Gray with successive balls in her final set but, even at full stretch, she couldn't quite get to a caught-and-bowled chance off Kate Coppack on the hat-trick ball.

Superchargers captain Hollie Armitage saluted her overseas crew, not forgetting Georgia Wareham, the Australian spinner who had left halfway through the campaign because of injury but who's still honoured by the squad in the form of a life-size cardboard cut-out figure in their dressing room.

"We were probably a little bit rocked halfway through the comp(etition) when we lost 'Wolf' (Wareham) but Nic's (Carey) come in with some flying form – I don't know what they're doing in Tassie pre-season but I want a bit of that," smiled Armitage.

"The three Aussies have been brilliant – bat, ball, field, energy around the group and they've come into their peak at the right time. I'm really glad they're in my line-up."

But Saturday really belonged to 18-year-old Perrin, who smashed 15 fours and five sixes as she became only the second woman after Tammy Beaumont in 2023 to reach three figures.

Only Harry Brook's 41-ball century for the Superchargers in the men's competition against Welsh Fire in 2023 was quicker in Hundred history, leaving Perrin to smile after learning of this fact: "One ball? Damn, I better hit the gym, so I can send those sixes a bit further."
