Australia cement No.1 Test ranking, gain spot in T20Is

Australia has increased their lead over India at the top of the ICC Test rankings to nine points as England fell to their lowest mark since 1995 following their 4-0 Ashes defeat

Australia have strengthened their hold on the No.1 men's Test ranking in the ICC's annual update with their 4-0 Ashes series victory helping consign England to their lowest mark in 27 years.

Pat Cummins' team moved from 119 to 128 ranking points, increasing their lead over second-placed India (119) to nine points in the annual rankings update that drops the 2018-19 season and reflects all series completed since May 2019.

Australia haven't lost a Test since January 2021 when Rishabh Pant inspired India to a stunning victory at the Gabba as they chased down 328 to claim their second-straight series win on Aussie soil.

Since taking over the captaincy from Tim Paine ahead of the 2021-22 summer, Cummins has led an Ashes thrashing of England and a gruelling 1-0 (3) away series win over Pakistan in March, while India have beaten New Zealand 1-0 (2) and Sri Lanka 2-0 (2) at home but lost to South Africa 2-1 (3) away.

Australia's next Test assignment is a two-match series in Galle in June-July, where they were thrashed 3-0 in 2016 after also claiming the No.1 ranking in the annual update three months prior.

"The challenge of winning away, probably in recent times the record of the Australian cricket team on the road, in particular in Test series, that's probably our greatest challenge," new coach Andrew McDonald said on SEN radio on Tuesday.

"I'd like to think we can improve that record with the personnel that we've got within the camp.

"We've lost two recent series to India at home as well so we're vulnerable at home … but that on the road record is something we want to improve and we've started well in Pakistan."

Australia is also on top of the ICC World Test Championship standings, ahead of South Africa in second and India in third, with the top two to play off in the final in mid-2023.

England, who also lost 1-0 (3) to the West Indies in the Caribbean after their Ashes drubbing, fell one spot to No.6 and slipped nine rating points to 88 in the annual update with new skipper Ben Stokes taking over a side that has won just one Test match in the past 12 months.

Their new rating is the lowest mark England have dropped to since 1995, with their 4-1 series victory over India in 2018 removed from the rankings.

The new rankings reflect all Test series completed since May 2019, with those completed prior to May 2021 weighted at 50 per cent and subsequent series weighted at 100 per cent.

England's series against India, that began in 2021, will be included in the rankings once the final postponed Test is completed at Edgbaston in July. India lead the five-match series 2-1.

New Zealand (125) have retained top spot in the ODI rankings but their lead over England (124) has been reduced from three points to one.

Australia (107) is third but lost five points and the gap to England has blown out from seven to 17 rating points, with India in fourth on 105 points and Pakistan (102) moving past South Africa to fifth place following their 2-1 series win against Aaron Finch's side.

India (270) remains on top in T20I rankings, extending their lead over second-placed England (265) from one point to five points.

Despite their maiden T20 World Cup triumph in November 2021, Australia could only climb to one spot to fifth and retained the same number of rating points (251) as the last annual update.

New Zealand fell two places to No.6, losing five rating points (250), while Pakistan remains in third with 261 points and South Africa jumped one spot to fourth on 253 points.
