David the destroyer sends Delhi crashing out

A six-hitting blitz from Tim David saw wooden spooners Mumbai defeat Delhi after batting failures from David Warner and Mitch Marsh, putting Glenn Maxwell's Bangalore into the IPL playoffs instead

The Indian Premier League campaign of Ricky Ponting's Delhi Capitals is over after Tim David's power hitting sent them to defeat to bottom-of-the-league Mumbai Indians.

The loss meant joy for Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood as their Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise took the final playoff spot instead.

David Warner and Mitch Marsh had both been in good form, but Warner made five and Marsh perished to a golden duck as Capitals could post only 7-159 off their 20 overs.

Warner was caught by Jasprit Bumrah off fellow Aussie Daniel Sams (1-30). Bumrah then did damage with this bowling taking 3-25 off his four overs, including the first-ball dismissal of Marsh.

Delhi restricted Mumbai to 2-92 at the end of 14 overs, leaving the bottom-placed side requiring 68 runs in six overs.

Enter the Singapore-born Australian Tim David, who smashed 34 off 11 balls, including four sixes, enabling Mumbai to get over the line with five balls to spare.

David should have been out from his first ball having feathered an edge off Shardul Thakur to Rishabh Pant. But the wicketkeeper-captain decided against invoking the DRS when his appeal was turned down.

Replays showed David had edged the ball.

"I thought there was something but everyone standing in the circle was not convinced enough," Pant said. "I was asking should we go up, (but) at the end, I didn't take the review."

David then launched a low full toss way back into the Wankhede Stadium for a massive 97-metre six to get off the mark.

Having smashed Khaleel Ahmed down the ground for a six over long off, the A$1.5m buy at this year's auction then crashed Thakur for two more sixes off the front foot with powerful drives in the 18th over.

But Thakur had the final say when another full toss was mistimed by David as his attempted flick to the leg-side found the leading edge and provided a simple catch to extra cover.

Mumbai still needed 14 runs from the final 13 balls when David departed,  and Ramandeep Singh hit two fours and a three to knock 13 runs off six balls and secure the win.

Bangalore will face Marcus Stoinis's Lucknow Super Giants in Wednesday's eliminator game, while Gujarat Titans will take on Rajasthan Royals in Tuesday's playoff match.
