Smith fined for dissent in Shield game

Test batsman docked a quarter of his match fee having been deemed to have shown dissent on his caught-behind dismissal

Steve Smith will enter next week's first Domain Test a little lighter in the pocket after he was fined for dissent in New South Wales' Marsh Sheffield Shield game at the SCG.

Smith was visibly frustrated when he was given out caught behind for 103 on day two of the Blues' clash with Western Australia.

He was deemed to have gotten a faint nick playing a ramp shot to WA allrounder Marcus Stoinis, which was held by gloveman Josh Inglis standing up to the stumps.

The 30-year-old appeared shocked to be given out and momentarily remained at the crease before reluctantly leaving the field shaking his head.

Smith posts ton in dour Shield battle

Smith was fined 25 per cent of his match fee having pleaded guilty to the charge of showing dissent at an umpire's decision.

Following his innings, Smith admitted he did not believe bat had hit ball.

"You're allowed to be disappointed," Smith said. "I didn't feel as though I hit it but that happens in the game of cricket, you've just got to move on."

The strange dismissal ended a marathon innings which lasted five-and-a-half hours in what is his slowest first-class century in terms of balls faced.

Smith pierces 3-6 leg-side field with perfect placement

It took the right-hander 290 deliveries to reach triple-figures as he was tested by a disciplined WA bowling attack, which set leg-side-heavy fields to counter his scoring and squeeze a wicket.

Smith is the seventh player to be charged under the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct this summer, with Shield players Marcus Harris, Glenn Maxwell and Sam Whiteman having also been sanctioned.
