Thrilling night of WT20 action

India-Pakistan overshadowed by Dutch heroics

The Super-10 teams are set after the associate nations' group stage comes to a close in a whirlwind of power hitting from the Netherlands.

The Dutch onslaught broke Australia's record of sixes in an innings – set when Aaron Finch smashed England to all parts of Hampshire in 2013 – and put the men in orange through to the Super-10 stage at the expense of Ireland and Zimbabwe.

The amazing run chase overshadowed what turned out to be a one-sided contest between India and Pakistan.

Dutch blast past Irish into Super-10

Ireland 4/189 (20.0) lost to The Netherlands 4/193 (13.5) by six wickets

The Netherlands smashed the record for most sixes in an innings on their way to upsetting Ireland in Sylhet on Friday, romping into the Super-10 stages in the World Twenty20.

Wesley Barresi hit Tim Murtagh over mid-wicket for the 19th six of the innings to seal an emphatic six-wicket win as the Netherlands chased down a daunting 190-run target in just 13.5 overs.

Their rampaging victory means the Netherlands qualify for the Super-10 from Group B at the expense of more fancied Zimbabwe and Ireland. They join Group One in the next round.

Zim win but still going home

United Arab Emirates 9/116 (20.0) lost to Zimbabwe 5/118 (13.4) by five wickets

Allrounder Elton Chigumbura struck a fiery half-century to help Zimbabwe score a five-wicket World Twenty20 win over United Arab Emirates in Sylhet on Friday, keeping their hopes of reaching the next round alive until they were dashed by the Netherlands.

Chigumbura smashed three sixes and six boundaries in his unbeaten 21-ball 53 to lift Zimbabwe from a struggling 4-34 and surpass a modest 117-run target in 13.4 overs.

The win also lifted Zimbabwe's net run-rate over Ireland who later faced the Netherlands in the crucial match to decide which team qualifies for the Super-10 stage from Group B.

India open account in style

Pakistan 7/130 (20.0) lost to India 3/131 (18.3) by seven wickets

India have cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket win against traditional rivals Pakistan with nine balls to spare in both sides’ first match of the World T20 tournament in Bangladesh.

India skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl first, opening with off-spinner Ravi Ashwin and in a possible sign of things to come throughout this tournament, proceeded to use spin for 13 of the 20 overs.

It worked.

Pakistan were restricted to 7-130 from their 20 overs, as leg-spinner Amit Mishra took the bowling honours with 2-22 from four overs.

At 1-44 in the eighth over, the Pakistani innings had been given a solid foundation by Ahmed Shehzad (22 off 17) and captain Mohammad Hafeez (15 off 22), but it was Ravindra Jadeja who struck in his first over with the key wicket of Hafeez.

From that point, Pakistan failed to mount a serious resurgence, Umar Akmal top-scoring with 33.
