Michael Clarke is the best since Bradman, statistically, at least.
Captain Clarke's super stats
Clarke is the second-best Australian batting captain in Test history. And he's the third-best run-scorer, on average, of any Test captain.
Clarke plundered another ton today, cracking 148 against England on day two of the second Commonwealth Bank Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval.
Since being appointed captain in March 2011, Clarke has a Test average of 64.42. As Test captain, he's peeled off 12 tons in his total of 3221 runs - only the peerless Sir Donald Bradman can better those figures.
Bradman led Australia in 24 Tests, accumulating 3147 runs, including 14 centuries, at the stunning average of 101.54.
Clarke, who averaged 49.97 when not captain, is next best - well ahead of Greg Chappell (48 Tests as captain, 4029 runs at 55.38) and Bob Simpson (39 Tests as captain, 3623 runs at 54.07).
And Clarke's feats stand up to worldwide scrutiny too. Of any player to have led his country in 15 or more Test matches, Clarke sits behind only Bradman and Sri Lankan wizard Kumar Sangakkara.
Sangakkara captained the Lankans in 15 Tests and scored 1601 runs at 69.61, including seven centuries.
Clarke is already proving more durable than Sangakkara, and against England on Friday continued his fond affair with Adelaide Oval, where he now averages 104.75 and has made six Test centuries and three half-centuries.
The prolific run-scorer also averages above 50 at three other Australian Test venues: Brisbane's Gabba (103), Hobart's Blundstone Arena (65.83) and the SCG (53.35).
For the record, his average dips below 50 at the MCG (42.81) and Perth's WACA Ground (37). But in this rich vein of form, and with both those venues to come in the next two Test matches, there's still time.
