Victoria bolster pace attack

Fast bowling duo signed for 2014-15 season

Victoria has looked to boost its pace attack, signing Jake Haberfield and Chris Tremain for the 2014-15 season.

Haberfield, who played 29 matches for South Australia, played two Bupa Sheffield Shield matches for Victoria last season and has had a brilliant season with Premier Cricket title-holders Footscray-Edgewater.

The 27-year-old took 59 wickets across the season, including three seven-wicket hauls and a bag of six in the final.

The right arm quick also has an impressive limited-overs record with the third lowest bowling average in Australian domestic one-day history (21.38), behind only Dennis Lillee and Geoff Dymock, and the third lowest strike rate (26.00), bettered only by Stuart MacGill and Shaun Tait.

"He had a great year and performed in the big games, taking his side to a premiership," Victorian State Talent Manager Andrew Lynch said.

"He certainly wasn't out of his depth in his two matches with the state side and was probably unlucky not to have played more."

The Bushrangers struggled in the 2013-14 season, managing just the one outright victory in the four-day format against Tasmania and finding themselves 3-0 and 6-9 against eventual Shield winners New South Wales.

The inclusion of Tremain, who has played six first-class matches for New South Wales, will further strengthen the state's fast bowling depth.

"We are really excited about Tremain – he is a 22-year-old fast bowler who bowls with good pace and outswing," Lynch said.

"He suffered from a lack of opportunities at New South Wales but we think we can give him that."

Veteran David Hussey will remain at the Bushrangers for another season, playing and having a role as part-time batting coach.

"Huss' main role next year will be to develop the young batters," Lynch said.

"This will include captaining the 2nd XI and Futures League side when required."

Wicket-keeper Aaron Ayre has also being given a rookie contract with the state.
