Finn joins elite group with Cup hat-trick

Fast-bowler first Englishman to take hat-trick in a Cricket World Cup

Steve Finn became the seventh bowler to record a Cricket World Cup hat-trick and the first Englishman to do so in a remarkable ending to Australia's innings at the MCG.

Finn snared the wickets of Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson – all caught in the outfield – as the Australians pursued quick runs to add to their already hefty total of 342.

Match report: Finch century powers Australia

Finn's feat places him in an elite World Cup category alongside Chetan Sharma (India v New Zealand, 1987), Saqlain Mushtaq (Pakistan v Zimbabwe, '99), Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka v Bangladesh, '03), Brett Lee (Australia v Kenya, '03) and Kemar Roach (West Indies v Netherlands, '11).

Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga is the only player to record two World Cup hat-tricks ('07, '11), with his first effort, against South Africa no less, the only instance of a double hat-trick (four wickets in four balls) in one-day international history.

Finn finished with 5-71 to become just the third Englishman to claim a five-wicket haul in World Cups, after off-spinner Vic Marks (v Sri Lanka, '83) and seamer Tim Bresnan (v India, '11).
