He was only at the crease briefly, but Chris Gayle is already making his presence felt in the BBL
Gold standard Gayle reaches unique mark
Chris Gayle has officially landed in the KFC Big Bash League.
Gayle, on board with Melbourne Renegades for BBL|05, began brightly enough in clubbing two sixes and two fours in a handy cameo of 23 from 16 as his side pursued Brisbane Heat's 5-180 at the Gabba.
Much of the hype surrounding the larger-than-life Jamaican had been centred upon a whisper that his bat manufacturer had supplied him with a gold-coloured bat.
And while the bat was more mustard than gold, it was just another illustration of how the man who dubs himself the #WorldBoss on social media separates himself from his contemporaries.
But Gayle gets away with it because he is without question the most devastating batsman in the brief history of Twenty20 cricket.
And the milestone he reached with his second six tonight was just another reminder of that fact.
WATCH: Gayle somehow top edges a six
An Andrew Fekete delivery just short of a good length was routinely deposited into the crowd beyond long-on by the left-hander, who didn't even appear to connect as cleanly as he'd have liked.
It was enough for six runs, and enough to see Gayle become the first man to hit 600 sixes in Twenty20 cricket.
Yep, 600 sixes.
Last week, Brendon McCullum equalled Adam Gilchrist's record for 100 sixes in Test cricket.
No player has come close to Gayle's Twenty20 sixes tally – next on the list is his fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard, a distant second with 388.
Gayle was out with the score at 1-38 at the beginning of the fifth over.
It was well before the whips began cracking on this T20 contest, but in a sense, it didn't matter – the #WorldBoss has landed.
