By the numbers: Smith in elite company

A stack of intriguing stats from the series-opening day at the Gabba

58.94 – Steve Smith's career average, the third highest among all the batsmen who have played at least 50 innings in Tests and the highest among active cricketers. Of 404 batsmen who have 50 innings under their belt, only Herbert Sutcliffe (60.73) and Don Bradman (99.94) have a better average than him. The next best after Smith among the active cricketers is Joe Root (52.94) and then Younis Khan (52.89). He finished the opening day of the series against Pakistan unbeaten on 110 off 192 balls.

16 – The number of centuries Smith has scored in Tests, the most by any batsman in the last four years. The next best in the period are David Warner and Younis Khan, both of them have 13 each. Smith didn't score any hundreds in his first 11 Tests and but has scored 16 from his next 37. It was also his maiden hundred against Pakistan.

Skipper Smith's sweet 16th Test ton

6 – The number of hundreds that have been scored in the three pink– ball Tests this year. It started with Azhar Ali's triple ton (302*) in Dubai followed by Darren Bravo's 116 in the same Test. Australia's previous Test in Adelaide witnessed three hundreds scored by Faf du Plessis (118*), Usman Khawaja (145) and Stephen Cook (104). It's a fair departure from the inaugural day– night Test in Adelaide last year, where Peter Nevill's 66 was the top score.

6 – is also the number of tosses Australia had lost in consecutive Tests before winning one today. The captain Steve Smith had lost the coin flip in all three Tests of the previous two series against South Africa and Sri Lanka. Luck finally went his way otherwise it would have been first time Australia would have lost seven in a row.

39 – The number of innings taken by Smith to score 2000 runs in Australia, making him the joint– fourth quickest Australian to reach this milestone on home soil. The three Australians who reached the mark in less innings than him are: Doug Walters (36), Matthew Hayden (36) and Don Bradman (26). The Australia vice– captain David Warner had also completed 2000 runs Down Under in 39 innings.

42 – Misbah– ul– Haq's age. He (42 years and 201 days) became the third oldest visiting captain to lead a Test side on Australian soil. The only two captains older than him to lead the team in Australia are Wally Hammond (43 years & 226 days) and WG Grace (43 years & 250 days).

34.53 – Usman Khawaja's average against spin in Tests which is 21 less than his average against seam (55.58). In his 21 Tests, he has scored 945 runs and been dismissed 17 times by pace, while he's struck 518 runs and been out 15 times to spin.

45.71 – David Warner's strike– rate today, the third lowest for him in a Test innings when he's faced at least 50 balls. He scored 32 runs off 70 balls before being dismissed lbw by Mohammad Amir. He scored 50 off 136 balls at 36.76 against West Indies in Dominica in 2012 and 23 off 61 balls against India in Chennai in 2013, his two slowest innings.

Amir strikes as Pakistan roar back

41 – The number of consecutive dot balls bowled by Amir, the longest he has ever gone in an innings in Tests without conceding a run. His previous longest stretch incidentally was in his last Test in Australia when he bowled 34 consecutive scoreless deliveries in Hobart in 2010.

30 – The number of overs bowled by Pakistan in the first session. It was first time in over five years that they bowled 30 or more overs in first session of the Test. The last time it happened was against West Indies in Guyana in 2011 when they bowled 31 in the first session. They also managed to bowl 90 overs in the day. They have struggled with the over rates recently, falling behind the required rate in their last two Tests – in Christchurch and Hamilton –resulting in a one– match suspension for Misbah and 100 per cent match fee fine for the stand– in captain Azhar Ali.

78 – The number of runs conceded by Wahab Riaz off no– balls in Tests since 2015, the most by any bowler. Next on the list are West Indies' Shannon Gabriel (69) and India's Ishant Sharma (53).  Wahab overstepped four times today and also bowled a wide.

Renshaw lights up Gabba with sparkling 71

3 – The number of Pakistan– born players, excluding those who were born before the partition in 1947, who have played Tests against the country of their birth. The Islamabad– born Usman Khawaja became the third such player after Imran Tahir (South Africa) and Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe). England have handed caps to two Pakistan– born players – Usman Afzal and Owais Shah – but neither played a Test against their native country.

26, 343 – The number of people that came to see the first day's play at the Gabba, the largest turnout in Brisbane on the opening day of a non– Ashes Test. There were 20,804 people in the ground after the second session which means 5539 more turned up in the evening session. The previous record for day one of a non– Ashes Test was 25,144 when South Africa visited in 2012.
