Woakes joins Stokes on injured list

Fast-bowling allrounder to miss the early stages of ODI series against Australia this month

England have suffered another injury blow ahead of their ODI series against Australia, with Chris Woakes ruled out of the early part of the series due to injury.

The home side confirmed on Tuesday that Woakes will miss "the first part of the series" due to a right quad strain and has been replaced by fast bowler Jake Ball.

Woakes joins Ben Stokes on the sidelines but England are hopeful both players will be available later in the five-match series.

"Both players have commenced their injury rehab programmes and will be hoping to respond to treatment with the aim of featuring in the latter stages of the series," the ECB statement said.

Stokes tore his left hamstring during fielding practice for England's second Test against Pakistan at Headingley. Scans confirmed a tear and after further assessment he has now been sidelined from England's ODI against Scotland on June 10 and the "first part" of the ODI series with Australia.

Woakes leads fightback with rollicking cameo

"(Stokes) will be unavailable for the first part of the five-match ODI series against Australia as he recovers from a left hamstring tear," an ECB spokesperson said.

"Stokes will be assessed later this week. He will continue his rehabilitation programme and will return to his county side Durham on Monday."

Batsman Dawid Malan has been added to England's ODI squad for the Scotland game as cover for Stokes, while Sam Billings, who last summer played with the Sydney Sixers in the KFC BBL, has been drafted into the team to face Australia.

Broad, Woakes wreck Pakistan top order

Stokes has not faced Australia since last year's Champions Trophy tournament, missing an Ashes Test series, five-match ODI series and T20 tri-series also involving New Zealand after he was sidelined by the ECB following his alleged involvement in a street brawl in Bristol last September.

The allrounder has pleaded not guilty to a charge of affray and will face court for a trial from August 6, just three days before England's second Test against India this winter.

Woakes has been a key part of England's rise to No.1 in the ICC's ODI rankings.

The first of five ODIs against Australia is at The Oval on June 13.
