Injured allrounder ruled out of England-NZ Test series

Colin de Grandhomme suffered a heel injury during a match to forget in the first Test at Lord's, which included a first-ball duck and bowling England captain Ben Stokes off a no-ball

New Zealand's prospects of winning their three-Test series in England have suffered a blow with allrounder Colin de Grandhomme ruled out of the remainder of the series through injury.

The Kiwis lost the first Test at Lord's on Sunday during which de Grandhomme suffered a tear in his right heel.

With de Grandhomme facing up to 12 weeks on the sidelines, Michael Bracewell, who had been with the Black Caps squad in London as cover for injured batter Henry Nicholls, will now remain with the touring party.

"It's a real shame for Colin to suffer this injury so early in the series. He's a massive part of our Test side and we'll certainly miss him," NZ coach Gary Stead said.

"It's great to be able to call on someone like Michael who's been with the squad for the past month and is match-ready."

Spin bowling allrounder Bracewell debut for New Zealand in one-day international cricket against the Netherlands earlier this year but is yet to play a Test.

De Grandhomme top-scored with 42 in the Kiwi's first innings at Lord's but otherwise had a match to forget in the five-wicket defeat.

He was run out off his first ball in the second innings and bowled Ben Stokes from a delivery that was deemed a no-ball, with the England captain going on to make a crucial half-century.

Former England captain Joe Root brought up his 10,000th Test run during a match-winning knock of 115 not out, which guided the hosts to their first victory in 10 matches.

The second Test at Trent Bridge begins at 8pm AEST on Friday and will be broadcast live in Australia on Fox Cricket and Kayo.
