Suryakumar Yadav smacked an unbeaten 34 off 18 balls to guide India to victory over the West Indies by six wickets in the first match of their Twenty20 series.
Yadav hit five fours and a six to rescue India from a precarious 3-95 at Eden Gardens, putting on 48 off 26 balls with Venkatesh Iyer (24 not out) to seal Wednesday's win with seven balls to spare.
That was after Nicholas Pooran had scored 61 off 43 balls to take the West Indies to 7-157.
Captain Rohit Sharma provided a quick start to the Indian innings by smacking 40 off 19 balls, including four fours and three sixes.
Sharma and Ishan Kishan (35) put on 64 off 45 balls for the first wicket but the skipper holed out off Roston Chase (2-14) in the eighth over and the innings came unstuck.
Chase also accounted for Kishan, who played an uncharacteristic knock off 42 balls.
India's chase became a struggle at 4-114 when Yadav and Iyer came together to salvage a win, with Iyer hitting two fours before clouting a six to seal the victory.
Rohit, Kishan and Suryakumar will again all play for Mumbai at this year's Indian Premier League after Kishan was picked up for A$2.8m at last weekend's auction, the highest price for any player.
Rohit (A$2.9m) and Suryakumar (A$1.5m) had already been retained by the five-time champions before the auction, where Mumbai also picked up Australians Tim David, Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith.
Earlier, Pooran's half-century powered West Indies to a challenging total on a slow Eden Gardens pitch.
West Indies lost Brandon King (4) early to Bhuvneshwar Kumar but Kyle Mayers and Pooran then added 49 off 36 deliveries for the second wicket.
India's spin power came into focus thereafter, with Yuzvendra Chahal (1-34) getting rid of Myers lbw.
Debutant Ravi Bishnoi struck twice in the 11th over, trapping Roston Chase lbw and then Rovman Powell holed out.
Bishnoi was named man of the match after picking up 2-17 from four overs.
"I was both nervous and excited (on debut)," he said. "I just tried to bowl stump to stump as the ball was skidding a bit. I did not want to give them room to clear the boundary with power."
The second T20 in the three-match series will be played on Friday at Eden Gardens again.
