Bangladesh stun South Africa in historic win

Bangladesh beat South Africa in South Africa for the very first time in another blow to the Proteas' chances of automatic qualification for the World Cup

Bangladesh ended their long victory drought in South Africa with a 38-run win in the first one-day international at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

Shakib Al Hasan led a strong Bangladesh batting effort, hitting 77 off 64 balls as Bangladesh made 7-314 after being sent in.

Fast bowlers Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed then reduced South Africa to 3-36 in reply.

Rassie van der Dussen hit 86 and David Miller made a hard-hit 79 but South Africa were bowled out for 276.

Bangladesh had previously lost every match they played against the Proteas in South Africa dating back 20 years; six Tests, nine one-day internationals and four Twenty20 internationals.

The loss is another blow for South Africa, who are struggling in 10th spot on the ODI Super League ladder and are in danger of missing automatic qualification for next year's World Cup in India.

The Proteas have won just three of their 11 matches in the Super League and have series to come against the likes of India, England and Australia.

The top eight in the ODI Super League qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the bottom five teams will be forced into a qualifier tournament.

Bangladesh currently sit top of the Super League with 11 wins from 16 matches.
