Guptill gets IPL chance through injury

New Zealand opener flies out to join Ponting's Mumbai side following back injury to West Indian Lendl Simmons

Black Caps opener Martin Guptill has finally made it into the Indian Premier League, after being called into the Mumbai Indians side to replace the injured West Indian Lendl Simmons.

Guptill has been one of the stars in New Zealand's recent limited overs success and was surprisingly not signed in the IPL auction process in February.

However, a lower back injury to Simmons has now provided the 29-year-old his chance to play in the lucrative Indian Twenty20 competition.

Guptill left Auckland for India on Thursday.

Corey Anderson, Mitchell McClenaghan and Tim Southee are the other New Zealanders playing for the Rohit Sharma-led Indians, who have one win from two matches so far.

Earlier this week, Guptill was named captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors side in the Caribbean Premier League, which starts in July.

The Aucklander recently featured in his fifth World T20 event in India, scoring 140 runs in four games at an impressive strike rate of 157.30 as New Zealand reach the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, David Warner and the Sunrisers Hyderabad will be without fast bowler Ashish Nehra after he picked up a groin injury during Royal Challengers Bangalore's run-fest.

"Nehra has hurt his groin. He will be out for a couple of games," Warner said after his side were thumbed by RCB by 45 runs.

Nehra was playing his first game for Sunrisers, having joined the franchise from the now-defunct Chennai Super Kings. He limped off the field after bowling 2.1 overs having conceded 21 runs.
