Silk's sublime ton in vain as Tassie fall short against JFM-led SA

Axed Test opener Jake Weatherald has fallen just shy of a century in South Australia's seven-run win over Tasmania in the One-Day Cup.

SA posted 7-383 from 50 overs and survived a masterclass from Jordan Silk, who made 142 from 106 balls in Tasmania's 8-376.

Batting at No.4, SA's Weatherald made 92 from 89 balls in Wednesday's fixture at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.

SA recruit Matthew Gilkes top-scored with an unbeaten 97 and opener Jake Fraser-McGurk blasted six sixes in his 88 from just 47 balls.

Tasmania's run chase began with an assault from Mitch Owen (26 from 13 balls), who cracked four sixes, including three in four balls from the second over bowled by Nathan McAndrew.

But Owen, Caleb Jewell (13) and Test allrounder Beau Webster (11) were all out inside nine overs, leaving the visitors 3-57.

Stalwart Silk combined with Tim Ward (61 from 45 deliveries) for a 110-run partnership in 12.2 overs.

And after Ward was dismissed by spinner Ben Manenti (2-54 from 10 overs), Silk continued his brazen innings and posted his ton from only 79 balls.

Silk powered to his highest One-Day Cup score to give Tasmania a sniff – they required 90 runs from the last 10 overs with four wickets in hand.

He took the target down to 60 runs from the final seven overs before being bowled by Henry Thornton (2-77 from nine overs).

Tasmania required 18 from the last over but couldn't reach their target, with Thornton, Manenti and McAndrew (2-72 from 10 overs) taking multiple wickets.

Earlier, SA's innings was given a flying start by openers Fraser-McGurk and Mackenzie Harvey, who put on 120 in 13.4 overs.

McGurk also smashed nine fours in his ultra-aggressive knock, and Harvey scored 41 from 44 balls.

Left-hander Weatherald, who switched states from Tasmania during the off-season, was in fine touch in a knock laced with four sixes and nine fours.

And former NSW wicketkeeper-batter Gilkes also smashed the Tasmanian bowlers – his rapid-fire 97 not out from only 65 balls featured 14 fours.

All of Tasmania's bowlers copped some stick – the most economical was paceman Riley Meredith (1-59 from 10 overs), while Owen (2-39 from five overs) and spinner Matt Kuhnemann (2-71 from nine) were the chief wicket-takers.
