Brown's Big Bash season in doubt following back injury

Adelaide Strikers are set to be without key quick Darcie Brown for at least the start of their Weber WBBL|12 campaign, with the fast bowler to be sidelined for up to 10 weeks with a back injury.

Brown, 23, was diagnosed with a disc injury following her return from the Australia A tour of India, where she played two T20s and a one-dayer.

It ruled her out of contention for Australia's ODI series against Bangladesh next month and with Brown now required to spend at least three weeks on rest before building her loads back up, she could also miss a significant chunk of the WBBL season.

"She's had a bit of a disc issue with her back that she's been trying to get on top of, and again, unfortunately, just it hasn't progressed as quickly as we would have liked," Australia national selector Shawn Flegler told reporters on Wednesday.

"She got back to Australia earlier in the week and she got scanned again and got clinically assessed, and (the injury) just hasn't progressed.

"We're going to have to shut her down for a few weeks initially, just offload her from bowling and running in particular, and then it'll be a reload period after that.

"So worst case scenario, it's actually 10 weeks. But we're hopeful that it improves quicker than that.

"We're hopeful that she gets back for some WBBL. But if she doesn't, she'll be in contention for particularly the Champions Trophy in the new year."

The injury is a blow for Brown, who had headed to India eager to win back her place in the national side after she was dropped for the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

She played two of the 20-over matches in New Chandigarh, taking 1-31 and 0-27, before a starring display in the second one-dayer in Mohali where she captured 3-39 from eight overs.

It is also a blow to the Strikers' pace stocks as they look to return to the WBBL finals.

They will hope Brown returns for the business end of the campaign, but while they wait, they will be looking to their young quicks including Eleanor Larosa to step up alongside experienced international pace bowlers Megan Schutt and Tahlia McGrath.

The Strikers have confirmed 11 of their 15 players for WBBL|12, including their full quota of three internationals.

They looked to boost their batting and spin departments with those overseas signings, with England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone returning, and England opener Maia Bouchier recruited to join South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt, who was already on a multi-year deal.

The club has also returned the majority of it's local core, with McGrath and Schutt joined by Bridget Patterson, Maddie Penna, Amanda-Jade Wellington and Ellie Johnston.

Players still off contract from last season include spinners Jemma Barsby and Anesu Mushangwe, batter Tabatha Saville and quick Ella Wilson. Fellow SA-contracted pace bowlers Maggie Clark and Emmerson Filsell also joined the Strikers as local replacement players in WBBL|11.
