New Zealand have named a new-look squad following a trio of retirements, while Bangladesh have appointed a new head coach for their ODIs against Australia
World Cup-winning spinner back for NZ's tour of Australia
World-Cup winning off-spinner Eden Carson will return from a lengthy injury lay-off after being named in New Zealand's T20I squad to tour Australia, as the White Ferns enter a new era.
Carson, who underwent elbow surgery last December, is one of four inclusions to the squad that failed to make the knockout stages of the most recent T20 World Cup in England earlier this year, alongside wicketkeeper-batter Bella James and fast bowlers Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe.
New Zealand T20I squad: Melie Kerr (c), Eden Carson, Flora Devonshire, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Polly Inglis (wk), Bella James, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Izzy Sharp
Wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze was unavailable for selection after undergoing surgery on a thumb injury, with Polly Inglis to take the gloves in her absence.
Also missing from the White Ferns' most recent T20I squad are retired legends Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu, who all called time on their international careers at the conclusion of the World Cup.
Carson, 25, has played 37 T20Is and 24 ODIs for New Zealand since debuting in July 2022 and captured nine wickets during their triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. She will bolster the spin department alongside all-rounders Nensi Patel, Flora Devonshire, and captain Amelia Kerr.
"To be back in the White Ferns environment is really special," Carson said.
"The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I've been fortunate to have great support around me and I'm feeling ready to get back out there and contribute."
James has played one T20I for New Zealand, against Australia in March 2025, while she also played two ODIs against the Aussies in late 2024. Rowe last played a T20I in September 2024, while Penfold has played 11 T20Is since her debut in 2022.
Dean Brownlie, who has been the White Ferns' batting coach for almost four years, will meanwhile step in as interim head coach for the tour. New Zealand Cricket parted ways with Ben Sawyer, a former Australia assistant, last month.
"There's a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it's going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side," Brownlie said.
"Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets within that."
New Zealand will arrive in Australia on October 12 and will play a warm-up fixture against the Governor General's XI at North Sydney Oval on October 15.
The Governor-General's XI squad will be announced next week.
Joty retained as skipper, Bangladesh appoint new coachÂ
Nigar Sultana will carry on as Bangladesh's ODI captain for the three-match series against Australia, despite stepping down from the T20I captaincy following last month's Asian Games in order to focus on her batting.
Bangladesh however will arrive in Australia with a new head coach, after the BCB elected not to renew the contract of Sarwar Imran, replacing him with former Bermuda player and experienced coach David Hemp, who has been working with the organisation for several years.
Bangladesh ODI squad: Nigar Sultana (c), Nahida Akter, Shorna Akter, Marufa Akter, Rabeya Khan, Ritu Moni, Sobhana Mostary, Sarmin Sultana, Sharmin Akter, Sanjida Akther, Sultana Khatun, Dilara Akter, Farzana Haque, Disha Biswas, Murshida Khatun, Habiba Islam
Hemp, who was Victoria's women's coach from 2015-2020 and the inaugural Melbourne Stars' WBBL coach across the same period, has also previously served as Bangladesh men's batting coach and in the BCB's High Performance unit. He was Pakistan women's head coach from 2020 to 2022.
This will be Bangladesh's first bilateral tour of Australia, following their admission to the ICC Women's ODI Championship in 2022. Australia travelled to Bangladesh during the last Championship cycle.
Their only previous visit to Australia was during the 2020 T20 World Cup.
The Tigers have selected uncapped pace-bowling allrounder duo of Disha Biswas and right-arm seamer Habiba Islam for the series, and recalled batter Murshida Khatun and wicketkeeper-batter Dilara Akter.
Bangladesh have dropped three players who featured in their last ODI series, against Sri Lanka in April - Juairiya Ferdous, Fahima Khatun and Fariha Trisna.
