Davies hits 'flow state' in remarkable double ton

Ollie Davies became the first player in nine years to score a Sheffield Shield double ton for New South Wales

It was a hard feeling for Ollie Davies to describe after having just hit 253 from 225 balls as opener in NSW's Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania on Friday.

Davies smashed 38 fours and four sixes in a stunning showing that was the Blues' first double-century for nine years, before he was caught out in the deep.

"It's pretty like surreal," Davies said. "When I was batting with Jack Edwards at the end, I was kind of just like in this flow state where everything's kind of working, and I wasn't thinking too much.

"I was just seeing the ball and hitting it, and just reacting as best I could."

Every boundary of dynamo Davies' 253

Davies had struggled in the previous Shield campaign and was dropped from the side in December, but a move from number five to opener at the behest of new coach Brad Haddin proved to be a master stoke.

The move to opening the batting began with a chat in preseason and Davies took the chance with open arms. But if you asked him whether he could see himself as an opener even a few years ago, he would have dismissed it as "a load of crap".

In a special moment, the 25-year-old was able to give his father a nod as he watched on at Cricket Central.

"Both him (dad) and (brother) Joel have faced 200 balls before, and I hadn't before this fixture," Davies said.

"The aim was to get to 200. I gave him a little salute when I when I got there. I think it was an outside edge for four, like through third man."
