McDermott primed for Aussie recall after blistering BBL

The leading run-scorer in BBL|11 looks well placed to win a spot in Australia's T20 squad to face Sri Lanka next month

Australia's T20 wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has backed his Hobart Hurricanes teammate Ben McDermott to replicate his impressive KFC BBL form in international cricket.

A recall to national colours looms for McDermott now that his Big Bash season is over and Wade is confident the right-hander will get another opportunity in the upcoming Dettol T20Is against Sri Lanka, beginning on February 11.

With a multi-format tour of Pakistan also on the horizon, Australia skipper Aaron Finch has indicated some of the country's biggest names will be rested for the Sri Lanka series, which could see Big Bash stars like McDermott win a spot.

The Hurricanes opener hit 577 runs at 48.08 to top the BBL|11 runs tally, with his history-making back-to-back centuries of 110 not out against the Strikers and 127 against the Renegades one of the highlights of the season.

McDermott has played 17 T20Is and two ODIs in his career so far, managing a top score of just 35, but Wade said the 27-year-old is "absolutely" ready to thrive at the highest level.

Insane! McDermott creates history with back-to-back tons

"I'm sure Ben McDermott will certainly be in one of those teams," Wade told cricket.com.au last night.

"There's guys like Timmy David as well that will hopefully get an opportunity and myself will be around that team.

"It's been a long summer for the Test players so I'm not sure how many of those guys are playing in the T20 Sri Lanka series … so there's going to be some opportunities coming up.

"You hear (Marcus) Stoinis talk about the scar tissue that you build up over your career and getting opportunities early and failing.

"It builds your character, so (McDermott) knows what he needs to do at that level now. He knows his game so well compared to when he played last time, so he'll go out and do exactly what he's been doing here (in the BBL) at international level. I have no doubt about that."

When pushed on Friday about which players out of the Big Bash might be picked to play against Sri Lanka, Finch said McDermott had been in "super form".

"He's been the leading run scorer in the Big Bash, and he's got some big hundreds that dominate games, so I'd be very surprised if he's not," Finch said.

"We will select that over the weekend or early next week. It's about managing guys' workloads. There will be some guys who are still in the preparation phase for Pakistan and we'll be mixing and matching, and it's always exciting to see some new faces."

Meanwhile, Wade will spend some time with his family during the three-week break before the Sri Lanka series having not been home since before last year's T20 World Cup.

The left-hander was a star of Australia's Cup triumph and has a mortgage on the keeper-batter role ahead of their title defence on home soil later this year.

"I'm looking forward to getting home to spend some time with the family and resetting, to be honest," he said.

"We've got a lot of cricket that will come up later in the year as well.

"It's nice to know that I'm going to rock into that (T20) team and know my role pretty much straight away, which is something that I probably haven't had for a few years now."
