Warner, Stoinis out of third ODI against New Zealand

Opener rested for Australia's final match against New Zealand due to heavy workload over the next 12 months, with allrounder Marcus Stoinis ruled out with a side strain

David Warner and Marcus Stoinis won't play in Sunday's third Dettol ODI against New Zealand in Cairns as the Aussies take no chances ahead of the T20 World Cup next month.

Stoinis left the field with a side complaint in the 23rd over of New Zealand's innings on Thursday, one over after he took the wicket of Jimmy Neesham, and he didn't return to the field for the rest of the match.

He spent five overs in the Australian changerooms as Ashton Agar replaced him in the field, before sitting on the sidelines for the remaining overs of the Kiwis' innings.

Stoinis had to leave the tour of Sri Lanka in June with a side strain he picked up while batting and now the Australian selectors will have to be wary of his workload with the T20 World Cup looming.

Stoinis will undergo rehabilitation in Perth leading into Australia's three-match T20I tour of India from September 21-26.

Fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been drafted into the squad as Stoinis' replacement having just finished a stint with Hampshire and London Spirit in England.

There is no injury concern for Warner who has left the squad to spend more time at home before a hectic 12 months of cricket.

Unlike the rest of Australia's T20 World Cup squad, it had already been announced that Warner would not travel to India for this month's T20I series.

It's the second forced change to the ODI squad on the current tour of northern Queensland, with Mitch Marsh departing after the first ODI against Zimbabwe in Townsville with a sore ankle.

He was replaced by wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who now looks likely to add to his ODI tally after making his debut in the fifth ODI in Sri Lanka in June.

Fantastic Finch: Stellar ODI career comes to a close

Sunday's clash with New Zealand will be Aaron Finch's last in the format after the Australian captain announced his retirement from one-day international cricket earlier today.

Australia's playing XI for the final match of the series will be named prior to tomorrow’s game.

Updated Australia squad: Aaron Finch, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa
