Hits and misses of the CPL T20

Viv and Moody pick their team of the tournament

The annual Twenty20 carnival of cricket in the West Indies, the Caribbean Premier League, is over for another year.

Barbados Tridents were crowned champions for 2014 on Sunday when they won a rain-shortened final against Guyana Amazon Warriors in St Kitts.

So what have we learnt from the annual display of Caribbean crash and bash? Take a look at our hits and misses of the 2014 tournament.

HITS

The official team of the tournament, selected by Sir Vivian Richards and Tom Moody, is dominated by locals, with Pakistan duo Shoaib Malik and Sohail Tanvir the only non-Windies players in the 12-man squad.

There were four centuries scored in the tournament; two from Sydney Sixers target Dwayne Smith and one each from former Sydney Thunder opener Chris Gayle and former Melbourne Renegades allrounder Marlon Samuels.

Undoubtedly the bowling performance of the tournament came from former Sydney Sixers spinner Sunil Narine in Guyana's win over Trinidad & Tobago, when he became the first man in history to bowl a maiden in a sudden-death Super Over.

The leading run-scorer for the tournament was Guyana opener Lendl Simmons, while paceman Ravi Rampaul lead all bowlers with 18 wickets.

MISSES

Kevin Pietersen – the former England star failed to make much of an impressions during his brief two-match stint with St Lucia Zouks. The 34-year-old posted scores of 23 and 7 in his two innings, and only made the highlights reel when he was the victim of a remarkable catch from New Zealand international Martin Guptill.

Owais Shah– the veteran English batsman has made a habit of starring in Twenty20 leagues around the world, but he failed to fire in this tournament. Shah scored just 77 runs from six innings, averaging just 15.40.

Marlon Samuels's bowling – having been banned by the ICC from bowling his quicker ball due to an illegal action, the Windies' all-rounder's impact with the ball was minimal. Samuels took just two wickets in nine matches at an expensive 92 runs apiece.

THE AUSSIES

Five Australian players took part in the CPL this year, with four of them representing Antigua Hawksbills.

Adelaide Strikers recruit Ben Laughlin was the only Aussie to make a significant impact, picking up eight wickets in as many matches and giving up just 6.85 runs an over.

Veteran spinner Brad Hogg, who on Thursday re-signed with Perth Scorchers for another season, picked up just four wickets in eight matches for the Hawksbills.

Melbourne Stars veteran David Hussey and Hurricanes batsman Ben Dunk both failed to pass 50 in nine matches for Antigua, while Scorchers batsman Adam Voges averaged just 13.77 in 11 matches for Jamaica.
