Mumbai keeper felled by freak throw

Mumbai's Ishan Kishan suffered a gruesome eye injury that capped a horror night for the gloveman

Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan appears to have escaped serious injury after a freak incident felled the gloveman with a nasty blow to the head.

Kishan moved to collect a routine throw from Hardik Pandya in the 13th over of Royal Challengers Bangalore's run chase in Tuesday night IPL action when the ball took a nasty bounce and collected the keeper on the right eye.

The ball bounced awkwardly off a rough patch on a pitch being prepared alongside the one in use for the match, and left Kishan writhing on the ground in pain as the game was halted for several minutes.

Kohli, Rohit battle as Mumbai succeed

"Ouch, that really just bounced up from one of the foot holes, he hasn't got a helmet on," former England captain Nasser Hussain said on commentary.

"That is just rotten luck from nowhere and this is not a good blow for a wicketkeeper. I've seen wicketkeepers end their careers with blows like this. That's horrible."

After several minutes of medical attention, Kishan was able to walk from the field, with substitute Aditya Tare taking over glove duties.

"It was very unfortunate," Mumbai star Rohit Sharma said after the match.

"But he seems to be alright. He has some swelling under his eyes which, I guess, should be okay by tomorrow or day after.

"We've got a few days before we play the next match. I think 22nd is when we're playing, so we have three-four days in between where we can assess and hopefully he'll be fine."

The incident was the latest freak accident to lay a wicketkeeper low. Mark Boucher famously was forced into an early retirement after a bail hit him in the left eye in 2012, while former Australia Test gloveman Peter Nevill was struck by a flying bat in the Big Bash League.

The ball to the head capped a horror night for Kishan, who had earlier been bowled for a first-ball duck by Umesh Yadav.

However, there was some cheer as Mumbai claimed a 46-run win over Virat Kohli's Bangalore side, despite the India captain hitting an unbeaten 92 in the run chase.

Gayle, Dhoni turn back the clock

Kohli opened the innings as RCB dropped Kiwi international Brendon McCullum, but his replacement – fellow Kiwi Corey Anderson – fell for a first-ball duck as Bangalore could only muster 8-167.

That left them 46 runs short of the 6-213 Mumbai had piled up, thanks to a stunning 52-ball blitz by Rohit that yielded 94 runs, while West Indies star Evin Lewis hit 65 from 42 balls.

Umesh Yadav had opened the match with back-to-back wickets, bowling Suryakumar Yadav and Kishan before Lewis and Rohit responded with a 108-run stand.
