Bumrah declared the best in the business

Former New Zealand tearaway labels Indian quick the best short-format bowler in the world ahead of IPL opener

Ahead of the Mumbai Indians' campaign to retain their Indian Premier League crown, assistant coach Shane Bond has boldly pronounced paceman Jasprit Bumrah as the best limited-overs bowler on the planet.

A slippery quick with an awkward action, Bumrah burst onto the international scene in 2016 and has since taken more white-ball wickets (105) than any other fast bowler in international cricket.

Bumrah, Rohit star to seal India's ODI series win

"Jasprit is the No.1 bowler in the short form of the game," Bond, recently appointed Sydney Thunder's head coach in the KFC Big Bash League, was quoted as saying by Indian media.

"If you talk to anybody in world cricket about the short form game, they will talk about this bloke at the top of the tree.

"Every team is looking for someone who can do a job at the end of the innings in particular and there is no better bowler than Jasprit."

Bumrah, the International Cricket Counci's No.1 ranked ODI bowler, looms as one of the reigning IPL champions' trump cards for the upcoming season.

Gone from last year's title-winning bowling attack are pace duo Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga, leaving the 24-year-old, along with new fast-bowling recruits Pat Cummins and Mustafizur Rahman as Mumbai's key men with the ball.

Bumrah holds his nerve in thrilling Super Over

Deployed as a limited-overs specialist for the first two years of his record-breaking international career, Bumrah made his Test debut on India's recent tour of South Africa.

He looked at home in the longest format, collecting 14 wickets in three Tests in his side's 1-2 series defeat.

"His start in the Test cricket has been fantastic as well," said Bond. "Over the period of three years, everyone has seen him develop into a fine all-round bowler across all formats.

"He has grown up as a person, he is a senior player now. I met him three years ago for the first time. He is still the same -- humble and wants to work hard.

"I think he is a complete bowler. The first thing you talk about him is his yorker. He has also got a good bouncer, moves the ball both way and hits the wicket hard.

"He has got a very good slower ball and a very good read on the game. The more he plays at the international level he is going to get better and better and is a big asset to Indian cricket."

The Indians, who have also picked up Brisbane Heat allrounder Ben Cutting for this year's tournament, kick off the 11th edition of the IPL with a clash against the reinstated Chennai Super Kings on Saturday evening (12.30am AEST Sunday) at Wankhede Stadium.
