Renegades put faith in journeyman Christian

Allrounder's remarkable career continues with new BBL club, as Melbourne outfit also re-sign one-Test quick

Journeyman Dan Christian will next summer take the tally of T20 teams he's played for to 15 after the Renegades announced they've lured the allrounder to the Melbourne franchise for their next three KFC Big Bash League campaigns.

The Renegades confirmed on Monday that both Christian, who helped Hobart Hurricanes to the BBL final last season, and former Test paceman Joe Mennie have put pen to paper on new multi-year deals.

Christian has played 35 international limited-overs games for Australia, most recently in October last year when he earnt a surprise recall to the national T20 side, while Mennie has a single Test to his name.

The Renegades will be the sixth Australian domestic limited-overs side Christian has turned out for; he's played for three states (his native NSW, South Australia and Victoria) in 50- and 20-over cricket as well as Brisbane Heat and the Hurricanes in the BBL.

"By signing Dan we know we’ve got a T20 player who has proven his ability around the world over a long period of time," Renegades coach Andrew McDonald said.

"He has the ability to change the game with his big hitting in the middle order.

"He also brings useful variations with the ball and plenty of experience bowling at the death so having that option gives the team added flexibility."

The 35-year-old was picked up by the Ricky Ponting-coached Delhi Daredevils for A$291,000 in this year's Indian Premier League auction, his fourth IPL side having also had stints with Royal Challengers Bangalore and now-defunct teams Deccan Chargers and Rising Pune Supergiant.

Christian captained Nottinghamshire to last year's English T20 Blast title and will again feature for the club this year. The Outlaws is his fourth county side following spells with Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Middlesex.

Rounding out Christian's unique list of teams is Caribbean Premier League side Trinbago Knight Riders, whom he played four games for last year including a victory in the final a week after playing in Nottinghamshire's T20 Blast triumph.

The veteran will lead Australia's Indigenous team on a commemorative tour of the United Kingdom in June to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the 1868 Aboriginal team that toured the UK.

Mennie, another native New South Welshman who crossed to South Australia, was the leading wicket-taker in last summer's JLT Cup but struggled to crack a strong Renegades outfit in BBL|07, taking 1-21 in his only match.

But he's signed a new two-year deal that will keep him in red until the end of the 2019-20 season.

The right-armer, who made his Test debut against South Africa in 2016 but was promptly axed in the post-Hobart clean-out, is currently in the UK playing for county side Lancashire.

The Renegades have now filled 15 spots on their list with two spots still available for international players.
