Du Plessis confident of success in India

The South Africa skipper believes his side are ready to perform well at the World Twenty20

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis remains confident his side can put an end to their trophy drought and claim the World Twenty20 title in India.

The Proteas have been labelled chokers in recent years following disappointing exits from major tournaments, but appear extremely settled as a side under the tutelage of du Plessis.

They have good batting options at the top of the order in AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock, two in-form allrounders and some match-winning bowlers that includes experienced paceman Dale Steyn and spinner Imran Tahir.

Still, South Africa have had well balanced  teams in the past and failed to flatter and du Plessis knows he has to deal with the 'chokers' tag as his side heads into another major tournament.

“The only way you can ever get the monkey off your back is if you do win a trophy,” du Plessis said.

“For me it is about our preparation, which has been really good and then if it happens, hopefully we will have to stop answering the question.

“T20 cricket is on-the-day performance, how you react to different pressure moments.

"There is already so much to worry about. For me personally and the team, that (tag) is not something we talk about or even think about."

Instead, du Plessis said he was focusing on ensuring his team was ready to perform in their first game of the tournament against England on March 18.

The South Africa skipper said the luxury of having two good allrounders at his disposal - David Wiese and Chris Morris are expected to feature in India - was sure to prove fruitful as the tournament progresses.

"About a year-and-a-half ago, we found that all-rounders was one of the boxes we needed to tick," du Plessis said.

"For me, the longer you can make the batting line-up, the better.

"Successful teams in T20 always had those long batting line-ups and that is what makes us a really strong team.

"The two of them (Wiese and Morris) coming in that makes our batting line really powerful."

Du Plessis declared India as the favourites to claim the trophy on home soil, but admitted the Twenty20 showcase was extremely wide open and there were a number of teams that could easily triumph.

"There is no longer an easy game," he said.

"There have been times when you can call someone a minnow, not anymore.

"In T20, anyone can beat anyone any day. It is going to be a cracker of a tournament."
