Triple blow for WA after bizarre injury

A big blow for the Warriors head of their JLT Cup opener with D'Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis and Matt Kelly to miss through injury

Western Australia have been dealt a blow just prior to their opening JLT One-Day Cup game of the summer, with the loss of three key players to injury.

D'Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis and Matt Kelly will all miss the day-night clash against New South Wales at the WACA Ground on Tuesday as the Warriors attempt to kick start their JLT Cup defence in style.

The trio have been replaced in the squad by Simon Mackin, Will Bosisto and Sam Whiteman, with the Warriors to name their final XI just before the toss.

Short was bitten on his left hand by his dog earlier this month and required stitches on the affected area, while Stoinis is still recovering from the hamstring injury he picked up while playing for Kent in England's Twenty20 competition.

All three are some chance of recovering in time for Western Australia's clash against South Australia on Saturday, according to WACA Sports Science Sports Medicine Manager Nick Jones.

"D'Arcy had an unlucky incident two weeks ago while playing with his dog, where his hand got in the way of a dog toy and the bite caused a deep laceration to the palm of his hand,” Jones said.

"He needed a few stitches and surgical washout but has returned to batting and catching balls this week, and is on track for selection in Round 2.

"Marcus and Matt are both very close to being cleared to play, but we would prefer not to rush anyone back at the beginning of the season and want to ensure they have fully recovered from injury before returning to play."

Western Warriors squad: Ashton Agar, Will Bosisto, Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Simon Mackin, Joel Paris, Josh Philippe, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner ©, Andrew Tye, Jonathan Wells, Sam Whiteman.
