Tahlia McGrath's onslaught headlines a string of impressive performances on the opening day of WNCL action, which included four centuries

McGrath's heroics snatch victory from Victoria

Full scorecard

Tahlia McGrath has lived up to her reputation as one of Australian cricket’s finest finishers, smacking three consecutive final-over sixes to bring up a magnificent century and seal a thrilling win against Victoria.

Needing 15 runs from the final over for victory, McGrath had the home crowd at Karen Rolton Oval on their feet as she carted fellow Australian allrounder Annabel Sutherland for three carbon-copy maximums over midwicket to defy Sophie Molineux’s Victorians by three wickets.

Finishing unbeaten on a run-a-ball 111, McGrath bludgeoned 12 boundaries in her match-winning knock that ended up upstaging the twin tons from Victorian pair Ellyse Perry and Sutherland.

In pursuit of Victoria’s 2-264, McGrath came to the crease in the sixth over to take on the anchor role for the Scorpions and appeared to have the chase under control before captain Molineux (2-47) dragged Victoria back into the contest with a pair of wickets at the death.

When Maddie Penna (15), Amanda-Jade Wellington (18) and Ellie Falconer (1) departed in quick succession to leave the Scorpions seven wickets down and still needing 19 runs off nine balls, the pressure mounted on McGrath’s shoulders but she responded emphatically.

McGrath snatches victory for Scorpions with brilliant ton

South Australia’s season-opening win came despite their famed bowling unit failing to halt a brilliant 209-run stand between Australian allrounders Perry and Sutherland.

Victorian’s No.4 Perry was brought to the crease in the first over of the day after South Australian captain Megan Schutt had opposing captain Molineux caught behind for a duck.

Perry posts patient ton to launch domestic summer

The Australian allrounder, who is currently playing as a batter only as she continues to recover from a back injury, played a trademark innings that featured 13 boundaries and saw her bounce on anything short.

Sutherland joined Perry in the middle when Falconer removed opener Makinley Blows (23) in the 18thover and from that point on, the Scorpions bowling attacked looked hapless as Perry and Sutherland piled on the runs to bring up twin tons in quick succession. International trio Darcie Brown, McGrath and Wellington all remained wicketless.

Victoria will be looking for revenge against the Scorpions when the two sides meet again at the same venue on Sunday.

Beth Mooney, who moved from Queensland during the off-season, was presented with her WA cap before the start of play by WA great Nicole Bolton.

While her debut for the state did not go entirely to plan, caught at slip on 17 chasing a wider delivery from Meteors quick Holly Ferling, her opening partner Chloe Piparo hit an unbeaten 75 from 95 deliveries to keep WA on track.

Piparo partnered with Mathilda Carmichael (27no) to see their state home in 30.1 overs.

The teams will face off at the WACA again on Sunday.

Voll's breakout WNCL ton sets up big Queensland win

Full scorecard

Queensland have kicked off their domestic one-day campaign with a 111-run win over fierce rivals New South Wales at North Sydney Oval.

Teenage allrounder Georgia Voll scored her first WNCL century, with her 145 laying the foundation for Queensland's mammoth total of 9-307.

The opener occupied the crease for 161 deliveries, finding the boundary 20 times during her epic knock.

Her efforts kept the Fire on track after NSW first-gamer Ebony Hoskin claimed three wickets to remove the remainder of Queensland's top-order cheaply.

Hoskin, handed an opportunity with pace trio Hannah Darlington, Lauren Cheatle and Stella Campbell all injured, dismissed Georgia Redmayne (6), Charli Knott (15) and Grace Harris (1).

However middle-order batters Mikayla Hinkley (26 off 22), Laura Harris (34 off 15), Jess Jonassen (16 off 20) and Courtney Sippel (19no off 18) all produced cameos to aid Voll's efforts.

The Breakers needed their Aussie stars to step up in pursuit of the giant target, but Alyssa Healy (26) was unable to make the most of a promising start and Ashleigh Gardner was removed for 14.

Opener Tahlia Wilson top-scored with 65 for NSW, but spinners Grace Harris (3-24) and Jonassen (2-30) kept the pressure on the Breakers, who were bowled out for 196 in the 44th over.

The teams will meet again on Sunday.
