Originally from Toowoomba, Brendan Doggett was a carpenter, happy building houses long before he became a Test cricketer.
The Queensland native, who has won the Sheffield Shield with both his home state and adopted South Australia, was named the Lord's Taverners Indigenous Cricketer of the Year in 2016. He spent one year on a rookie contract with Queensland, before being upgraded to their senior list in 2017-18.
He made his Sheffield Shield debut against Victoria in October 2017, going on to play in that season's final for the Bulls.
The following winter was part of the landmark Aboriginal XI tour of the UK in June 2018, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the original tour.
He travelled to the UAE as part of Australia's Test squad to face Pakistan in 2018, but didn't play a game.
Doggett has made key contributions to his sides in each of his Shield finals wins. For Queensland, he took 5-101 in the 2017-18 decider against Tasmania and also took wickets in the win over New South Wales in 2020-21.
The following season Doggett was on the move, signing with South Australia alongside good friend Nathan McSweeney, to work under the coach Jason Gillespie. Doggett also showed a willigness to move in the Big Bash League, having played for the Brisbane Heat, Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers.
In December 2024, Doggett was called into Australia's Test squad as cover for the injured Josh Hazlewood following a haul of 6-15 against India A a month earlier, but again did not get selected.
His capped off that successful season with a player-of-the-match performance against his old side in the Sheffield Shield final, taking 11 wickets.
After starting the 2025-26 summer strongly in the Shield, Doggett again found himself in Australian squad, for that summer's Ashes series, and was suddenly thrust into the starting XI when Hazlewood was ruled out with a hamstring strain.
With fellow Indigenous man Scott Boland also in the side for the Perth Test, it was the first time Australia had ever fielded a Test side with two Indigenous men in it.
