England teen sends down perfect over

Luke Robinson, 13, grabs six wickets in as many balls as club members consult the record books

A Schoolboy cricketer in England has achieved the extraordinary feat of a quadruple hat-trick, with his proud father having a perfect view of the carnage.

Philadelphia Cricket Club under-13s player Luke Robinson delivered the matchwinning over against Langley Park to claim six wickets in as many balls in a performance which has made headlines.

Quick Single: Downpours, dust-ups and Dizzy's double

Making the feat all the more meritorious was the fact each of his six victims were bowled as the 13-year-old finished with incredible figures of 6/1 in the match at Langley Park, near Durham City.

Officials from the 149-year-old club are reportedly checking their record books after Luke’s haul.

It was a family affair at the ground, with Luke playing alongside his younger brother, Matthew, 10, while his family were all in attendance to witness his effort.

His mother Helen was scoring, while grandfather Glenn was an interested spectator.

But Luke’s father Stephen had the best view – he was umpiring at the bowler’s end.

Stephen is a junior coach and senior player at Philadelphia and said it was a “surreal experience”.

Quick Single: Five Ashes questions England must answer

“He’d actually bowled two overs and not had any wickets,” Stephen told the Sunderland Echo.

“He was asking to be changed so that he could save his last one for later on in the innings.

“But I told him to keep on going and what he produced was just a procession. It was perfect. Langley Park were looking good at 10/1 but, after Luke’s over, they ended up getting just 18.

”He’s benefitted from some quality coaching at the club from the likes of former Durham County Cricket Club head coach Geoff Cook and former Durham bowler Neil Killeen.

“And now he’s reaping the reward of all the effort that he’s put in.”

A quadruple hat-trick also occurred in Australia in January – in a fourth grade Ballarat Cricket Association fixture.

Quick Single: Carey's perfect over

Golden Point opening bowler Aled Carey delivered his perfect over against East Ballarat, shredding their batting line-up after they reached 2/40 from 17 overs.

With the opposition only having nine players, Carey needed just one over to finish the innings.

“A bit of luck really I think,” Carey told The Courier at the time when asked to explain his incredible day.

“On a couple of occasions, I’ve been pretty close (to a hat-trick), three or four times throughout my life.

“But I’ve never been lucky enough to get that third one in a row.

“To go to the extent that I have now, I’m pretty happy.

“I’m still in shock at the moment. I don’t think I’ll ever do it again.”
