Mitch gets Baggy Green from his dad

Emotional former opener proud of son Mitchell

Scorecard: Pakistan v Australia, First Test

"Speak to my wife, we should have kept going!"

Geoff Marsh cracked jokes as his son Mitchell warmed up for his first spell of Test match bowling, the second of his offspring to play Test cricket for Australia.

Allrounder Mitchell Marsh joined his brother Shaun Marsh in following the footsteps of their father, the former Australia opener and coach had presented Baggy Green No.438 to his offspring, an experience he described as "quite tough" emotionally.

It was the second time Marsh had presented a Baggy Green to one of his children. His eldest son, Shaun, received Baggy Green No.422 from his father in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, in September 2011.

It made Geoff just the third Test player to have two sons also play Test cricket in the history of the game, and the genesis of his joke.

"It's a bit of an honour to have that, but I guess we're just lucky," Marsh said.

"I'm pleased for both my boys. They followed me around while I was playing Test cricket and coaching Australia.

"Deep down you could see it in their eyes they wanted to follow in those footsteps and now they've both been given that opportunity.

"Hopefully there's a lot of cricket left in them."

The Marsh clan gathered around the Australian team huddle to watch the patriarch present the Baggy Green.

Mitchell’s mother Michelle, his sister Melissa and his girlfriend all watched on. Brother Shaun was absent, with the WA squad preparing for this weekend’s Futures League match against Victoria as he fights his way back from an elbow injury.

Geoff Marsh paid tribute to the influence of Western Australia coach Justin Langer for getting Mitchell to where he is.

"I think he's been well trained by Justin Langer over the last two years," said Marsh.

"Justin has done a terrific job with him. He's worked very closely and been good for him."

Australia captain Michael Clarke this week wrote in his newspaper column that he saw Mitchell Marsh as a potential future Test captain, but Geoff cautioned his son from getting too far ahead of himself.

"It's nice to hear the Australian captain say things like that," said Marsh.

"I said to Mitch you've just got to take every day in Test cricket one day at a time.

"Test cricket puts out a lot of challenges, you've got to meet those challenges and you only do that through good focus and concentration and working hard.

"He's got to get through a lot of hurdles. He's only young, hopefully he can just perform well and consistent and see what happens after that."
