Zampa's star rising with a style all his own

Adam Zampa's standing as a world-class leg-spinner continues to rise after his remarkable six-wicket demolition job of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

Playing just his second IPL match for the Pune Rising Supergiants against the table-topping Hyderabad outfit, Zampa took six wickets in three overs at the death to finish with 6-19: the best figures for a wrist spinner in the history of the T20 format.

After being overlooked early in tournament Zampa has been a revelation in his two matches for Pune and received plenty of praise across the subcontinent.

The most encouraging aspect for Australian cricket team supporters is the way he has delivered under pressure, claiming the big wickets of distinguished players such as Kane Williamson, AB de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh.

"It's always nice to be able to express yourself in front of the world. The IPL is one of the biggest tournaments in the world and it is great place to prove yourself," Zampa told cricket.com.au.

"Hopefully more people will see how much I love the contest and I'm not too fazed about what is in front of me."

Given the responsibility of bowling at the death on flat surfaces with small boundaries, Zampa has used his full arsenal that includes a googly, a slider, a leg-break and canny drift, to fine effect. His early returns in the IPL, and indeed his ascent to the Australia team, show immense promise, and Zampa is keen to remain humble.

"To be honest, I'm not the most talented cricketer going around but I just want to push myself," the 24-year-old says.

"I love a fight and I think that brings out the best in me."

Australia captain Steve Smith was criticised after his side's World T20 exit for not bowling Zampa his full allotment of four overs in the defeat to India.

But Zampa holds no grudges and isn't one to dwell on the 'what-ifs'.

"I'm not really fussed about that. He (Smith) is smart guy and knows the game well. T20 is fast game and it is a split-second decision of whom you want to bowl and I guess at that second Smithy went with his gut decision and thought now is probably not the right time.

"I don't even know if it would change the result of the match. It's happened now it's time to move on."

It is a strong trait of Zampa's personality and character; he is a man not easily flustered. In the space of eight overs he has managed to gain the faith and confidence of his franchise captain, MS Dhoni.

"It is great to communicate with someone like Dhoni during my bowling spell," said Zampa.

"He has his own ideas, which are new to me as a bowler. He just gives me a couple of pointers.

"But after all is it is important to bowl to your strengths. Sometimes you can overcomplicate it a bit.

"I'm not Shane Warne, I know I don't have the big turning leg-break but I have my own style."
