The Royal Challengers Bangalore have their play-off hopes ended after Rohit Sharma helps Mumbai to a five-wicket win
Match Report:
ScorecardDefeat puts Kohli & co on IPL scrap heap
The score: Royal Challengers Bangalore 8-162 (de Villiers 43, Kohli 20, McClenaghan 3-34) lost to Mumbai Indians 6-165 (Rohit 56*, Buttler 33) by five wickets with one ball remaining
The match in a tweet: ABDv sparkles but RCB dumped out of titel race as McClenaghan and Rohit put Mumbai top of the table
The hero: New Zealander Mitchell McClenaghan recently revealed how he got his break by mimicking Mumbai Indians teammate Mitchell Johnson's action in his junior days. The Black Cap has got his own style now, and it continues to work, with three important wickets for the Mumbai side in their win that condemned the star-studded Bangalore side to further IPL misery. McClenaghan had crafted a plan for Virat Kohli, and delivered to perfection. A slower ball on the leg stump did just enough to deceive the India superstar and he chipped it straight to the mid-wicket fielder in Rohit Sharma. Kohli, in usual fashion, stood disbelieving at the wicket for several long seconds before being ushered on his way by the umpire. The Kiwi returned later to claim the key wickets of Kedar Jadhav for 28 and Pawan Negi for 35 – both caught by Kieron Pollard – to keep RCB's total contained.
The other hero: When Mumbai has needed a batter to stand up, invariably it has been captain Rohit Sharma. This match was no different as the Indians skipper constructed the perfect chase with an unbeaten 56 from 37 balls to guide the side home.

The South Africa legend has not had the best of tournaments as he continues to battle injury but when he's on, as he was here, he sparkles. Crunching boundaries over cover, down the pitch and down the ground, or swivelled over the leg-side, the man can do it all. Down on one knee, a swipe to the leg side saw the ball hit the top tier of the Wankhede Stadium. Sadly, a repeated attempt caught the top edge as the ABdV Show ended on 43 from 27.
The Aussie contingent: Travis Head hit 12 batting with first Kohli, then de Villiers, and Shane Watson added three coming in at No.6 for Bangalore. Watson was asked to bowl the final over, and had seven runs to defend. A wide first ball didn't help the cause but Mumbai could only manage singles from the next four deliveries. Now needing two from two Kohli brought up the field and Watson delivered a low full toss outside off that was crunched to the fence by Rohit to secure the win. Head took a fine catch on the boundary rope from a very high ball, judging it well to stay in the field of play, and had another more straightforward chance well taken later in the innings.
The play-off picture: There's still a long way to go in this season but already Kohli, de Villiers and co are out of play-off contention, this latest defeat sealing their fate. Perhaps the freedom from that expectation of making the finals will allow them to lose the shackles. Conversely, for Mumbai the victory in their home fortress seals them a spot in the post-season, and they will target the double-chance offered for the top two finishers.
Next fixtures: Bangalore return home to host Glenn Maxwell and the Kings XI Punjab on Saturday night, while Mumbai will be in action against cellar-dwellers Delhi on Sunday.
