Opener Yadav powers India to series lead in St Kitts

India moved 2-1 ahead in their five-match T20 series against West Indies after Suryakumar Yadav's 76 steered them to a seven-wicket victory

Opener Suryakumar Yadav scored an impressive 76 as India defeated West Indies by seven wickets in the third Twenty20 international to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Yadav struck eight fours and four sixes in his 44-ball knock, while wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant scored an unbeaten 33 as India chased down a target of 165 with one over to spare in the second of back-to-back games in St Kitts on Tuesday.

Yadav reached his fifth T20 fifty by hitting spinner Akeal Hosein for a six over deep square leg.

His entertaining innings was finally undone while trying to sweep medium-pacer Dominic Drakes and top-edging to Alzarri Joseph at fine leg.

Obed McCoy, who set a West Indies record with six wickets in the second T20 on Monday, returned 0-34 from his four overs on Tuesday.

India captain Rohit Sharma had retired hurt in the second over with a back spasm, but later said he expects to be fit for the final two matches.

Put in to bat, West Indies ended their innings on 5-164 after opener Kyle Mayers struck 73 off 50 balls. Rovman Powell (23 off 14) and Shimron Hetmyer (20 off 12) also chipped in with some quick runs at the end of the innings.

India pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 2-35, while allrounder Hardik Pandya and seamer Arshdeep Singh bagged one wicket each.

India won the series opener by 68 runs, while West Indies won the second match by five wickets.

The series moves to Lauderhill, Florida, for the last two matches, this Saturday and Sunday.
