Webb still flying high after last-ball heroics

A showdown with the all-conquering Heat is next for the Renegades after their stunning win over the Sixers

Courtney Webb admits she is still on cloud nine after achieving a dream most cricketers can only dream of.

The Melbourne Renegades batter made highlights reels around the country on Sunday after smashing a final-ball six to steal a victory from the star-studded Sydney Sixers.

To put that achievement into perspective, Webb had never hit a six in the Rebel WBBL before Sunday’s game, only clearing the ropes for the first time during the 12th over of the Renegades’ chase at Drummoyne Oval – the same maximum that Ellyse Perry attempted to intercept, only to injure her AC joint.

The timing of her second could not have been better.

The Renegades needed five to win, or four to send the game into a Super Over.

Steaming in to deliver that final delivery was one of the world’s best bowlers, South African quick Marizanne Kapp.

Webb held her nerve, striking a big six over long on to seal a famous win.

Re-live the thrilling finish of the Gades' revenge

"I haven’t hit too many sixes before so that was pretty awesome," Webb said on Tuesday.

"It’s all a bit of a blur … I knew I had to hit a six to get us over the line, so I backed myself to go to my strength area over cow and luckily the wind was blowing that way, which helped a little bit."

Webb has played eight of 10 matches for the Renegades this season, her second year in the Big Bash.

The 19-year-old has been an impressive cog in the middle-order, averaging 30.

Her heroics on Saturday, where she hit an unbeaten 34, wasn’t her first key contribution this season either – against the Hurricanes earlier this month she struck 33 in a 78-run stand with Jess Duffin to hand the Renegades a fighting win.

A former AFLW player, who spent two seasons with Carlton, Webb turned her attention full-time to cricket earlier this year after earning a state contract with Tasmania.

Sunday’s result also continued a tradition of thrillers between the Renegades and Sixers.

Earlier this season, Perry guided her team home with one ball to spare at the WACA, while last year’s semi-final between the teams famously went to a Super Over.

"It’s been a pretty crazy last 24 to 48 hours," Webb said.

"There’s been a lot of support from my friends and family and it was awesome to get a win over a team as good as the Sixers."

Renegades take revenge in last-ball thriller

Now, Webb hopes Sunday’s result gives them the momentum they need to push for a spot in the top four.

They currently sit in fourth spot, level on points with the fifth-ranked Scorchers, but must take on reigning champions Brisbane Heat twice from their remaining five matches.

The first of those matches will be played at Junction Oval on Wednesday, from 10am.

"It was a crucial game to get some momentum coming into these last few games," she said.

"We’ve won three in a row now, so we’re in a good position heading into the game against the Heat.

"Brisbane Heat have got a strong team, good bowling variations as well as a deep batting line-up.

"We’ll have to be on again tomorrow but hopefully we can bring our best game."
