Victoria claim miracle win after epic Tassie collapse

Tasmania looked to be cruising until blind pursuit of a bonus point saw a collapse of 6-12 as Victoria stole an incredible one-run win

Victoria have snatched an incredible one-run win from the jaws of defeat to overcome Tasmania, whose bold decision to relentlessly chase a bonus point backfired in spectacular circumstances.

Tasmania were flying at 4-172 in the 39th over chasing Victoria's 185, needing just 14 more runs for the win. Knowing that if they could achieve their target by the end of the 40th over they would secure a valuable bonus point, the Tasmanians threw caution to the wind.

Match wrap: Victoria steal an incredible victory

Beau Webster, on 20 from 25 balls, went down the wicket to try and hit Chris Tremain over the long-off fence but mis-cued and was well caught by Will Pucovski running back from mid-off.

Tasmania looked to still be in control with Ben McDermott at the crease, the opener having already reached his half-century from an unusually sedate 83 balls, alongside James Faulkner, the man once known as 'The Finisher' for his exploits in Australia's limited overs teams.

McDermott took Tremain over the deep mid-wicket fence at the end of the 39th over to move Tasmania to within five runs of the target, with five wickets in hand and six balls to still secure the bonus point.

McDermott anchors Tassie innings before joining chaos

Targeting the left-arm pace of Jackson Coleman, Faulkner looked to lift him over the third man fence but was caught by Jon Holland for just one. The next ball, McDermott's attempt to end it in a single shot ended in disaster as he charged down the wicket, mis-timed his pull shot and skied a second catch for Pucovski.

Coleman picked up a third in the over when Gurinder Sandhu skewed a cut shot and was superbly caught by Matt Short running backwards. The chance of a bonus point was gone, Tasmania 8-183 at the end of the 40th, and now needing three runs but with only two wickets in hand.

Sensing something special in the offering and with Tasmania's tail unsettled by the flurry of wickets, Tremain was fired up. Jackson Bird survived a big shout on his first delivery, and was given out off his second, caught behind down the leg-side.

Bird appeared to indicate he had not hit it and the umpire tapped his leg, appearing to indicate he'd given it out leg before but the scorebook recorded a catch to Peter Handscomb.

Maxwell floored by searing yorker at the WACA

Last man Riley Meredith turned a single to square leg for his first ball to bring Tasmania to within two runs of their target but Victoria would not be denied.

Tremain had Nathan Ellis, making his domestic one-day debut for Tasmania, struck on the pad and given out leg before, and sparking wild scenes of jubilation as the bowler was mobbed by teammates.

Will Sutherland, who had set an unwanted record for the most expensive return in Australian one-day domestic history in the previous match with 102 runs from his 10 overs against Western Australia, rebounded with a solid return of 2-43 from his nine today, taking the key scalps of opener Caleb Jewell (6) and veteran George Bailey (27).

He had earlier struck an important 53 from No.8 to be Victoria's top-scorer, and said the win was the best he'd ever been part of.

Two days after conceding 8-386 in their defeat to Western Australia at the same venue, the reigning domestic 50-over champions had their blushes saved by a terrific rearguard from teenager Sutherland.

Sutherland strikes back with gritty fifty to lead Vics effort

One of the country's most highly-rated young allrounders, it was a maiden half-century in a composed 66-ball knock for the 19-year-old.

Debutant quick  Ellis took 3-35 and removed Victoria's three top scorers in Sutherland, Glenn Maxwell (34) and Matt Short (27).

Marcus Harris returned from Ashes duty to open the batting for the Vics but became James Faulkner's first victim when he chopped on to the former ODI allrounder for just five.

Faulkner, playing his first domestic one-dayer in nearly two years, then had Pucovski caught behind for 10.

Victoria slumped to 5-64 as skipper Peter Handscomb, Aaron Finch and Nic Maddinson all departed cheaply.

Bailey fires in a brilliant left-handed throw

Maxwell, after surviving a painful blow to the foot from speedster Riley Meredith as well as a simple dropped chance at mid on from Ellis, posted 34 before Ellis made amends by having the allrounder caught behind for his maiden List A wicket.

Sutherland shepherded the tail, helping to add 52 for the final three wickets, and hit all three of his side's sixes including a clever upper-cut off Meredith.

Tasmania earlier handed a debut to batsman Caleb Jewell, while Chris Tremain was included at the expense of Scott Boland following Victoria's 125-run defeat to WA on Saturday.
