Marsh sidelined from ODI series with injury

Allrounder heads home with ankle issue to recover with eyes on T20 World Cup defence on home soil as Josh Inglis flown in as cover

Australia allrounder Mitch Marsh has been ruled out of the Dettol ODI Series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand with a "minor" ankle complaint.

Marsh reported he was experiencing ankle soreness following Australia's five-wicket win on Sunday in Townsville and will return home to Perth.

The allrounder is expected to be fit for Australia's three-match T20 tour of India that begins on September 21.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will be his replacement for the remaining five ODIs in northern Queensland, with the second match against Zimbabwe to be played Wednesday in Townsville.

Inglis will make his way back to Australia from England, where he is currently representing the London Spirit in the Hundred.

Inglis was a fresh arrival in England, having replaced Australian teammate Glenn Maxwell at the Spirit, and played just one game before being recalled.

Marsh breaks ice with first wicket of Aussie 'summer'

Marnus Labuschagne, Ashton Agar and Sean Abbott are the potential replacements for Marsh in game two of the series tomorrow.

Marsh took the first wicket of the 2022-23 season with a caught-and-bowled dismissal of Innocent Kaia during his spell of six overs and was later caught behind for two off three deliveries.

Steve Smith said it was a loss to lose the West Australian but fitness for the upcoming T20 World Cup was the priority for the allrounder.

"He's been playing some good white-ball cricket recently," Smith told reporters at Riverway Stadium on Tuesday.

All the highlights of Mitch Marsh's finest performance

"The way we set up our team the other day with bulk allrounders, he was a big part of that.

"It's disappointing for Mitch but there's some pretty important stuff coming up.

"He was a big part of our T20 World Cup campaign last year and I'm sure there's big plans for him this year.

"The priority is to get him right for that."
