India dominate day one in Wellington

Kiwis skittled, India's batsmen enjoy solid start

Full scorecard here

India have started their bid to level their Test series with New Zealand in superb fashion, routing the hosts for 192 before going to stumps at 2-100 on day one of the second Test in Wellington.

Shikhar Dhawan was the best of the Indian batsmen, charging to an unbeaten 71 from just 87 balls. He was at the crease with nightwatchman Ishant Sharma (three) at the close of play, with the tourists having lost Murali Vijay (two) and Cheteshwar Pujara (19), losing their wickets to Tim Southee and Trent Boult respectively.

Earlier, paceman Sharma had been the star with the ball, claiming 6-51 from his 17 overs, including three before lunch as the Kiwis limped to the first interval at 4-51.

The situation deteriorated further in the second session, with the home side slipping to 6-86 as Sharma claimed the fifth five-wicket haul of his career.

After being sent in on a green Basin Reserve pitch, Black Caps openers Peter Fulton (13) and Hamish Rutherford (12) continued their forgettable summer while debutant Tom Latham departed for an eight-ball duck.

All fell to lanky paceman Sharma, who claimed the trio in the space of 14 balls to have figures of 3-3 as New Zealand slumped to 3-26.

Mohammed Shami (1-17) snared the valuable scalp of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum for eight soon before lunch, leaving Kane Williamson  and Corey Anderson with the task of digging the Black Caps out of a serious hole on a fast, bouncy surface.

Anderson fought hard for his 24 but became Sharma's fourth victim, caught by Virat Kohli in the gully. Wicketkeeper BJ Watling (4) went soon after, falling to a superb delivery from Sharma that was edged and taken by Rohit Sharma in the slips to give the speedster his milestone.

Certainly it was Sharma who best utilised the conditions, introduced as a first-change bowler after the openers had put on a battling 23.

Rutherford fended a sharply rising ball to first slip and Fulton was trapped leg before by a full delivery that jagged back.

Both openers went past 50 in their first innings of the summer against the West Indies but have failed to do so in seven innings since, leaving uncertainty over their selection prospects for the mid-year tour of the West Indies.

Introduced in place of expecting father Ross Taylor, Latham looked uncomfortable in his short stay and was put out of his misery with a regulation snick to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

Sharma's spell was a sizzling response to being left out of India's squad for next month's World Twenty20 and to a growing band of critics who also question his place in the Test side.

New Zealand's session went from bad to disastrous when McCullum - whose 224 laid the foundation of their first Test win in Auckland last week - drove lazily at Shami and was caught at mid-off.

Williamson was fortunate not to depart two balls before lunch when he edged to Dhoni but replays showed Zaheer Khan had bowled a front-foot no ball.

Amazingly, the right-hander had another life in the second session in exactly the same way; this time Sharma was the guilty party, his over-stepping foot denying him a sixth wicket.

Williamson sought to make the most of his good luck, but was undone on 47 when he edged a Mohammed Shami delivery to Rohit at second slip.

Debutant Jimmy Neesham (33 from 35) and Tim Southee (32 from 32) both counterattacked with some success, pushing the score toward 200 on a Basin Reserve deck that looks to have plenty in it.

Trent Boult (2) was the last wicket to fall, giving Shami figures of 4-70.

Earlier, captain Dhoni ensured he would end the tour with a perfect toss record.

He won it at Eden Park and also in all five one-day internationals - a series his team lost 4-0.

India named an unchanged team from the Auckland Test while the Black Caps have made two changes.

Latham and allrounder Neesham are both making their debuts in place of Taylor and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi.
