Paine's career appears over as Tigers boost pace stocks

Former Australia captain Tim Paine not included in Tasmania's squad for next season as Kane Richardson and Billy Stanlake's state swaps confirmed

Tim Paine's playing career appears over with the former Australia captain not given a fresh contract with Tasmania.

Both Tasmania and Queensland have strengthened their fast-bowling stocks for 2022-23 with both states this morning announcing their squads for next season.

But Paine, who stepped down as Test captain when a sexting scandal broke before last summer's Ashes series, was not included in the Tigers squad.

After taking time away from cricket following his captaincy resignation, Paine returned to the Tasmanian cricket fold in an unofficial coaching role late last season.

His playing future remained uncertain until the release of Tasmania's contract list today, with his on-field career appearing to have ended after 35 Tests and 147 first-class matches.

As revealed by cricket.com.au last Friday, Australia white-ball paceman Kane Richardson has signed with the Bulls after moving to the Gold Coast with his family, while former ODI and T20I quick Billy Stanlake has switched from Queensland to the Tigers.

Evergreen seamer Peter Siddle, who is currently plying his trade with Somerset in the County Championship, has also signed a one-year extension with Tasmania, which will take him into his 16th summer of first-class cricket.

Left-arm spinner Tom Andrews, left-arm quick Sam Rainbird, who took Tasmania's best-ever first-class figures of 8-21 in the last match of the season, and batters Charlie Wakim and Mac Wright have also inked new deals with the Tigers, with opening batter Tim Ward signing a three-year extension.

The other inclusion alongside Stanlake is young allrounder Nick Davis, who landed a rookie deal after impressing with Premier Cricket club Glenorchy and Tasmania Second XI.

Fast bowler Iain Carlisle and allrounder Brad Hope have been upgraded from rookie deals to full contracts.

Tasmania narrowly missed the final in both the Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup last season, finishing third in each competition, and new men's head coach Jeff Vaughan said it was a positive there wasn't much need for list movement.

"There is a good mix of senior and emerging players within the list, and on the back of a promising season 2021-22 we are excited for what’s ahead," he said.

"With hopefully a full fixture of for both and red and white ball cricket this year, I’m really excited and confident about what this group can produce."

Queensland have also added left-arm quick Liam Guthrie, who will make the move from Western Australia.

The 25-year-old made seven appearances for the Brisbane Heat last season, claiming six wickets, and arrives at the Bulls with 12 first-class and nine List A matches of experience under his belt.

Richardson and Guthrie are among eight inclusions for Queensland for the 2022-23 season, with former ODI quick Gurinder Sandhu also earning Bulls contract for the first-time after a dominant season that yielded 25 Shield wickets – the fourth most prolific in the competition – and 12 one-day scalps.

The right-armer, who played twice for Australia in 2015, forced his way into the Queensland red- and white-ball sides on the back of strong performances in grade cricket after moving from Tasmania ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Queensland is the third state the 28-year-old has played for after he made his debut for NSW as a 19-year-old in 2013.

Left-handed batter Jack Clayton, who made a century on debut against Victoria in February, followed by 85 in his second first-class match, has been upgraded from a rookie deal to a full contract, while Sam Truloff has earned a contract again three years after being delisted.

Truloff, 29, was the leading scorer in Queensland Premier Cricket last season with 1,235 runs at 72.65 and finished the season in both the Bulls first-class and one-day line-ups after Test stars Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja departed for Australia's tour of Pakistan.

Fast bowler Connor Sully, who made both his first-class and List A debuts for the Bulls in October, has also been upgraded, while Australian Under-19 World Cup spinner Jackson Sinfield and Gold Coast allrounder Hugo Burdon have earned rookie contracts.

Spinner Jack Wood and wicketkeeper Lachlan Pfeffer have been delisted.
