Player Story
A tidy gloveman and aggressive left-handed batter, Matthew Gilkes exploded onto the domestic scene with a memorable Big Bash debut.
Called in to open for the Sydney Thunder with Shane Watson in BBL|08, the rookie keeper hit 51 off 38 balls against Perth Scorchers in a big chase in the west.
Gilkes made his Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup debuts the following season as New South Wales looked for a long-term successor to Peter Nevill.
He had some solid returns as Thunder opener in BBL|11 and BBL|12, including 93 off 57 balls against Adelaide Strikers.
The 2023-24 summer was Gilkes’ best in NSW’s Shield side, playing all 10 matches for the first time in his career and claiming 30 catches behind the stumps.
