Player Story
The career of fiery left-armer Mitchell Johnson has been the proverbial roller-coaster ride.
Statistically, he ranks as a genuine fast-bowling great of Australian cricket. But as is often the case, the raw figures don't even come close to telling his full story.
At his best – such as the Perth Test in 2008, Johannesburg in 2009 and Adelaide in 2013 – Johnson has produced some of the most memorable and exhilarating performances in recent memory.
But at his lowest moments – think Lord's in 2009 and the Gabba in 2010 – Johnson's wayward bowling and mental state have left him disenchanted with the game and the subject of ridicule from opposing fans.
When faced with a lengthy rehabilitation following toe surgery in 2011, Johnson even questioned whether he had the ability or desire to return to international cricket.
But barely three years later he was the most feared fast bowler in the world, having destroyed England and South Africa on his way to claiming the 2014 Allan Border Medal.
