From the middle of England with fraternal ties to the Caribbean, Emilio Gay initially choose to play international cricket for Italy, for which he was eligible via his maternal grandfather, and helped the country qualify for their first men's T20 World Cup in 2026. He had made his T20I debut in the Europe Qualifier event but injury prevented him from turning out at the World Cup.
Having come through the ranks at Northamptonshire, Gay hit his maiden century in 2021. He enjoyed a breakout 2024 County Championship by scoring more than 900 runs at 57.43 for Northants in the second division, including two centuries, including 261 against Middlesex. He moved to Durham for 2025 and scored four more County Championship tons (as well as another in the One-Day Cup) and was included in that year's England Lions squad that toured Australia in 2025-26 to shadow the ill-fated Ashes campaign.
Gay was selected in England's Test squad for the 2026 home series against New Zealand as the team moved on from Zak Crawley.
