Player Story
A stylish middle-order batter, Shreyas Iyer has made his mark in ODI cricket for India since his debut in 2017.
The Mumbai player was part of India’s U19 World Cup side in 2014 and had impressive First-class and List A debut seasons the same year. Iyer had an equally successful debut in Indian Premier League in 2015, where he was named the Emerging Player of the Year, playing for the Delhi Daredevils.
Iyer had a dream Test debut in 2021, hitting a century in the first innings and following it with a score of 65 in the second in the match against New Zealand.
His leadership qualities were identified early in his domestic and IPL career. He led the Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL finals in 2020. He went one better with the Kolkata Knight Riders, winning them the title in 2024.
Iyer has devolved a successful captain- coach partnership with Ricky Ponting in the IPL. The Australian legend rates him highly and signed him up as the captain for his new team Punjab Kings ahead of the 2025 season having worked with at the Delhi Capitals previously. The duo took the Kings to the final in the very first season as Iyer became the first captain to lead three different teams to the title clash of the IPL.
Iyer was rewarded for his leadership success in domestic and IPL cricket when he was named the vice-captain of the Indian ODI side in 2025.
