Born in Delhi, Nikhil Chaudhary's life took a dramatic turn when the COVID-19 pandemic closed international borders while he was visiting an uncle in Brisbane. 

The leg-spinning allrounder had played 14 limited-overs games for state side Punjab alongside the likes of Harbhajan Singh, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma and trialled with IPL side Mumbai Indians. But he pivoted to further his cricket ambitions in Brisbane with Northern Suburbs after being stranded by the border closures, taking a handful of jobs like working in a Mexican restaurant and parcel delivery driver.

His Brisbane club coach, former international allrounder James Hopes, recommended him to the Hobart Hurricanes in 2023 ahead of BBL|13, where he emerged as a key cog in the Hurricanes side while also developing a cult following for his on-field flair and Kabaddi-inspired wicket celebrations.

He made the move full-time to Tasmania and made a strong debut Sheffield Shield season in 2025-26 during which he took a five-wicket haul (against Queensland in October) and scored a century (against NSW in November), and earned a maiden state contract for 2026-27.

Having claimed permanent residency status in Australia, which made him eligible to represent his adopted country in international cricket, even if he was yet to claim citizenship, and was added to Australia's T20I squad for the 2026 tour of Bangladesh, making his debut in the first match of the series.
