An allrounder picked as Australia’s leading spinner in the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, it was Ashton Turner’s match-winning blitzkrieg of 84 not out off 43 balls in an ODI against India in 2019 which saw him gain global recognition.

In his early days, the lanky Western Australian had been in the UK on a Hampshire scholarship and he returned to the Warriors the following summer in good form, playing five Marsh Shield matches as WA made the final.

His good form for the Perth Scorchers saw him picked to play Sri Lanka in the T20 series in February 2017, his international debut.

Turner’s ODI debut came two years later in India, winning the match for Australia in just his second match with a stunning 84 not out. However, international opportunities after this series have been few and far between for Turner. 

Battling a string of injuries including some serious shoulder problems, Turner emerged as a leader of WA cricket and formed a strong bond with coach Adam Voges.

Turner is a four-time winner of the BBL with the Scorchers, including two as captain (BBL|11 and BBL|12). He also has five one-day cup titles to his name, with three coming under his leadership.

A surprise return to WA’s Shield team at the end of the 2022-23 summer, despite playing only four first-class matches in the previous three seasons, was a masterstroke, as he hit 128 in the winning final over Victoria.
